  • Dog-friendly beachfront site just five kilometres from Portland
  • A 25 minute drive to the Petrified Forest; view the seal colony nearby
  • Access to a private slipway; beachfront barbecue area and kids’ games
Peeping at what’s around Portland? Some of the things you’ll find include Australia’s largest seal colony, a petrified forest and truly spectacular beaches. Holiday Lifestyle Henty Bay is yet another splendid place and an excellent base for exploring Portland’s pretty awesome coastline and national parks. Just remember to pack your beach gear because this family-friendly site is alongside the 10-acre beachfront on the Dutton Way Foreshore Reserve and five minutes’ drive from Nun’s Beach in Portland. Keen or wannabe snorkelers and sea swimmers can get their fill on the beach, as can fishing fans. Handily, the site has a small, private boat ramp (and there’s plenty of parking for boats on site). Lively kids won’t be short on ways to let off steam either. The site has an enclosed recreation room with activities such as billiard tables and kids’ games, as well as a giant jumping pillow and a playground outside. When your tummy starts to growl, a quick solution can be found in the site’s licensed café, which includes takeaway options. Otherwise, with a little preparation and food gathered from the shops in Portland (which is just a five to 10 minutes’ drive away), you could get a barbecue on the go in the beachfront barbecue area (complete with a camp kitchen). Pets are also welcome at Holiday Lifestyle Henty Bay, so don’t forget to save any scraps for your canine friend. They’re sure to be a great companion as you take in Portland’s history and natural beauty. That’s not forgetting Australia’s largest seal colony visible from the Seal Colony Viewing Platform (20 minutes’ drive) and the only mainland gannet colony in Australia, the Point Danger Gannet Colony (15 minutes).

Local attractions

The real question here is where to first? Do you want to follow the Great Ocean Road all around the coast or head over to Discovery Bay Marine National Park (20 minutes’ drive) to take in sand dunes, cliffs, lava flow remnants, blowholes and the Petrified Forest (25 minutes)? The trunks of the Petrified Forest were formed thousands of years ago when water infiltrated the sand dunes. In Portland (five to 10 minutes), you could play a game of golf, stroll around the botanical gardens or visit the Portland Cable Trams Depot Museum for a tram ride along the foreshore. The Portland Maritime Discovery Centre (10 minutes) also divulges some of the local maritime and old whaling industries. Inland is just as spectacular as the coast, and that’s definitely the case at the Lower Glenelg National Park (50 minutes). The Glenelg River has a canoeing trail that takes four days to tackle, if you have the time. Otherwise, just settle for a shorter stretch.
