  • Quiet setting for rural camping with mountain views
  • In northern Tasmania; five minutes' drive from Lilydale Falls
  • Access to farm activities; fresh local produce available
Taking a trip over the Bass Strait to Tasmania? Sitting close to the north coast of the island just outside Lilydale, Cherry Top Farmstay is an excellent place to set up camp. Within driving distance of ancient rainforests, gorgeous seascapes and dozens of wineries, there's lots to see and do in this exceptionally diverse landscape. The park is part of a 15-acre sustainable organic farm, and tasty products like honey, hazelnuts and vegetables are regularly available for guests. Travellers of all ages are also welcome to get involved with farm activities, from helping in the vegetable patch (free) to photo tours and cherry picking (charges apply). Facilities here include access to firepits for storytelling sessions in the evening, as well as laundry facilities and a bathroom block (the camping area does not have access to showers). The centre of Lilydale is about a kilometre away to the north, where several eateries and places to stock up on groceries are available to keep self-catering simple; there is also a railway station for car-free trips in the local area. 25 minutes away by road is enough to take you to the larger city of Launceston, with bars, restaurants, landscaped gardens and spectacular views.

Local attractions

The local area is home to several spectacularly scenic waterside spots, including Lilydale Falls (five minutes' drive), Cataract Gorge Reserve (30 minutes; also great for rock climbing) and the Tamar river (20 minutes), where there are several world-class spots for canoeing (bring your own, or take advantage of canoe and kayak hire in Launceston, 25 minutes away). For more outdoor activities, check out the mountain bike trails at Hollybank (10 minutes), George Town (30 minutes) or Trevallyn (25 minutes), or head out for a hike up to the summit of Mount Arthur (15 minutes), set amid gorgeous greenery deep in a forest reserve. For a walk that's easier on the knees, take a stroll around the fragrant grounds of the Bridestowe Lavender Estate (25 minutes), or book yourself onto a wine tour at any of the region's renowned vineyards. If wine isn't your thing, sample local beers instead at the ever-popular Boags Brewery (25 minutes) or Little Rivers Brewery (35 minutes), both of which are well-established and recommended by your hosts. Finally, while you're likely to see all sorts of wildlife while out and about, make sure to head to Tasmania Zoo (40 minutes) for a close-up look at some of Australia's most unusual creatures.
