  • Family park with views of the Mount Burr Range
  • Canunda National Park and Lake Bonney less than 30 kilometres away
  • Playground, trampoline, free gas barbecues and campfire wood provided
You'll want to mill around this park for quite some time on your South Australia tour: Hillview Caravan Park is just outside Millicent, the Limestone Coast town that's close to spectacular beaches and national parks, Lake Bonney and the Blue Lake of Mount Gambier, the caves of Tantanoola and the wine region of Coonawarra. And all with mountain views too. Bordering a pine plantation a couple of kilometres from Millicent, Hillview has views of the Mount Burr Range, one of a cluster of dormant volcanoes along this stretch of coast. Canunda National Park and Tantanoola Caves Conservation Park are both within easy driving distance, Millicent Swimming Lake is close by, and sandy beaches and their opps for swimming, surfing, fishing and diving are under 15 kilometres from the site. Plenty of easy walking trails and pine forest drives can be had around the neighbouring pine plantation and its surrounds. Hillview is a peaceful and family-friendly site, welcoming all ages as well as friendly pets. It has a playground and a trampoline, a football net, a basketball ring and a library with games and books. This is also the place to eat alfresco: the gas barbecues are free to use, picnic tables are set throughout the site, and there's a campfire area with chopped wood provided. A few shops, bars and restaurants are in town at Millicent.

Local attractions

There's so much to do around this part of South Australia that you might end up staying for a bit longer than planned, whether you want to stay close to the site or head off on driving days around the coast and national parks. A multisports field and the Millicent Swimming Lake are within a few kilometres, along with the nature reserve of Lake McIntyre. Two watery musts in the region are Lake Bonney, one of Australia's biggest freshwater lakes, and the Blue Lake of Mount Gambier, a stunning spot where cobalt blue waters fill an extinct volcano crater. Tours can be booked around the volcano; if you'd rather go it alone, take the 3.6-kilometre trail to the viewing points. Bushwalking and dirtbike trailing are popular pastimes among the dunes, cliffs and bushland of the Canunda National Park, about 28 kilometres away, and fishing at nearby Southend, Beachport, Southend and Carpenters Rocks. The region's also famed for its caves and limestone caverns, which you can explore on a caving trip or via a subterranean diving excursion, and for the Coonawarra wine region, under an hour away. Tourist info on the area is available on site.
