  • Spacious 22-acre bushland park on Hindmarsh Island, South Australia
  • Murray Mouth 10 minutes' drive; Victor Harbor 25 minutes
  • Free barbecues, two swimming pools, community garden and camp kitchen
Sit back in the sunshine and scope out the local seascapes at Hindmarsh Island Caravan Park, close to the Murray Mouth and the spectacular Coorong National Park. This 22-acre bushland spot is covered by natural fauna, with large trees for shade and plenty of attractive greenery. The park has a great range of amenities too, with free barbecues, drums where you can light campfires, two outdoor swimming pools, a community garden, laundry facilities and a camp kitchen. For more entertainment, guests also have access to a playground, giant chess and other games available from reception. Well-behaved pets (under 10kg) are welcome. The island is a five-minute drive over the bridge from the historic port town of Goolwa on the Murray river, where wandering through the streets will take you to a wide range of food shops, cafés and bars. Don't fancy driving to the mainland? The park is home to a well-stocked convenience store for daily essentials. Elsewhere on the island, there are spacious stretches of sand down at the Murray Mouth Lookout (10 minutes by car), wildlife spotting opportunities in the Lawari Conservation Park (five minutes) and plenty of other little corners to explore, including Lonely Island, Australia's only island within an island.

Non-electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: We liked the fact that we could have a fire that we cooked on and sat around at night. We brought our own firewood and used the abundant supply of pinecones as kindling. Having a fire made it feel like "Proper Camping". We also liked the Rural aspect with a goat and Llama's plus the livestock on the neighbouring property. The cost of our stay was very reasonable as well.

Disliked: The only thing I didn't like was the male ablution block had only 2 toilets meaning there was lineup.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Beautiful place, really enjoyed watching everyone around having a good time as well, beautiful location right next to a beach with plenty of boat ramps. Good and clean public facilities including the kitchen.

Disliked: Camping sites don’t have a clear marking so maybe hard to differentiate between sites, they recommend 6 people for one site which I feel is a little less space if you have a car as well.

Non-electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: I’ve stayed there a few times before, the place is amazing for families as it’s so big. Plenty of things to do with the kids and always make friends with the other people there.

Disliked: I have nothing that I disliked

Local attractions

The Fleurieu Peninsula area is well known for its secluded beaches and diverse wildlife, both of which can be found in abundance in the Coorong National Park, a 130-kilometre-long stretch of sand dunes and coastal habitats that starts 10 minutes' drive away at the Goolwa Barrage. One of the best ways to see the western edge of the park is on a guided kayak tour from the Murray Mouth Lookout (10 minutes). For more watersports, make your way to the waterfront in Goolwa (five minutes) to hire a jetski, or head for surf lessons and hire at Goolwa Beach (10 minutes). If you feel like sticking around, there’s Goolwa Wharf market (five minutes) on the first and third Sunday of the month, or you could organise a round at South Lakes Golf Club (10 minutes), a friendly club in a scenic waterside location. For a steam train ride along the coast, take the Cockle Train from Goolwa out to Victor Harbor (or drive there in 25 minutes), then walk or catch a horse-drawn tram along a causeway out to Granite Island for fantastic views over the ocean.
