If you’re stuck between spending your downtime in a country haven or wandering city streets, come unstuck at Huntsville Caravan Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Maryborough city centre on Queensland’s Fraser Coast. Whether you favour urban stays or rural getaways, you’re in loads of luck, for it’s the best of both worlds here. Ease into your hols with leisurely parkland strolls – Pioneer Country Park is less than five minutes’ walk from the site, and there are plenty of paths crisscrossing its 36 acres. Or follow the footpaths and cycleways directly from Huntsville into the centre of Maryborough (45 minutes’ walk, or a 10-minute cycle) for museums, galleries and the Queens Park botanical gardens. Fancy a day or two mooching around market stalls and getting a taste of culture? Maryborough's monthly Sunday in the Park brings live music, food vendors and vintage steam train rides to Queens Park (five minutes away) and Maryborough Heritage City Market has taken over Adelaide and Ellena streets every Thursday for decades. That’s a lot of out-and-about wanderings, so take a day back on site to cool off in the pool and sort yourself out at the barbecue (stock up on supplies at the shopping centre across the street). Can’t stomach another day of grills? Pull up a chair at one of the restaurants in the city.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Bathroom, showers, 30 minutes of gas for $1 on bbq and coil ring for cooking, mini fridge with little freezer. Undercover kitchen with tables, flat areas for tents near trees for some shade, swimming pool. Wifi, laundry room and places to hang them

Disliked: So many ants, would be nice to have pots at reception to borrow, I bought a cheap one, but some campgrounds have supplied them for me as a backpacker with no car. Good thing there is an op shop across the street and a Big W in town. Nowhere to buy a bit of dish soap, across the street has big bottles for cheap though.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Really warm welcome from the moment we arrived and were shown personally to our pitch. Amenities were immaculately clean and the grounds were well kept with trees and shrubs giving shade and privacy. We were told about the local area and the nearby town of Maryborough was delightful. We swam in the site pool and had it to ourselves.

Disliked: Nothing- it was a great place to stay

Local attractions

Maryborough is the birthplace of author PL Travers, so to call it the home of Mary Poppins would only be a slight stretch. Time your stay right and you’ll be having a jolly holiday at the annual Mary Poppins festival, with parades, storytelling and chimney-sweep challenges. Make time too to seek out the lifesize Mary Poppins statue outside the former bank building where Travers was born (it’s practically perfect in every way). Take a jaunt outside the city with a trip to Hervey Bay, one of the best humpback whale watching spots in Queensland. You can have your pick of boating trips or nab a berth on the ferry to the fab Fraser Island instead – it’s the largest sand island in the world, and well worth an explore by four-wheel drive. Don’t forget your camera either: the wrecked ocean liner SS Maheno and the white sandy beaches of Lake McKenzie are particularly snapworthy. For nature-filled days, add Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary (kangaroos, dingoes, kookaburras… check, check, check), Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere and the spectacular 10-acre Bamboo Land to the list. If you’re in need of something bigger and more outdoorsy, hit the trails at Great Sandy National Park (50 minutes) or make tracks for the stunning coastline at Noosa National Park, just under two hours away.
