Tropics meet outback… just outside of Katherine, Contour Hotel Katherine has four acres of tropical gardens where guests can come and base themselves for adventures in Katherine, the outback and a region which is (quite frankly) top adventure territory in Australia's Top End. Track down gorges, watering holes, national parks, rivers and wildlife, and get to know the ancient Aboriginal culture. Relaxing and unwinding will be rather simple too, since the site has tennis courts, an outdoor pool surrounded by palms, a barbecue space and a bar and restaurant for all your foodie needs. Less than four hour’s drive from Darwin, base yourself here if you’re looking to explore Northern Territory areas such as Nitmiluk National Park (45 minutes), Elsey National Park (an hour and 10 minutes) and the Victoria River (two hours). With Katherine Gorge’s famed sandstone cliffs just 25 minutes’ drive away, you’ll also be well-based to cruise the river by boat or canoe, tackle the walking trails or even get a birds’ eye view of the landscape and gorge by helicopter or light plane. What about some fine fodder to fuel such adventures? Katherine has cafés, takeaways, restaurants and shops for quick eats, evenings out or foraging for ingredients for the barbecues back at base. They’re all within five minutes’ drive of the site.
