  • Campsite with mountain views in Patagonia’s Cordillera de los Andes
  • Half an hour’s drive to Lácar Lake; Cerro Chapelco cycling 15 minutes
  • Peaceful grass pitches with mountain hikes and Lanín volcano views
For wild camping amid spectacular Argentinian mountain scenery in Patagonia’s Cordillera de los Andes, there are few places that beat the location of Trabunco Alto, 40 minutes’ drive from San Martín de los Andes. It’s a massive 1,300 metres above sea level and thanks to the clear air, you’re almost guaranteed vibrant sunrises and sunsets all year around. The peaceful camping field is surrounded by beech trees and backed by snow-capped peaks, with the distinctive, pyramid-shaped Lanín volcano clearly visible from the (very few) grass pitches. Be sure to take a decent camera to capture the natural beauty of the region. Staying at this remote spot gives guests easy access to mountain hiking and climbing in summer (December to February). Please note, however, this is mountain territory and any hiking or trekking adventures must be carefully planned in advance; you should be properly equipped and always let someone know where you are heading. And a couple more things to bear in mind: there is no drinking water available on site, and due to the risk of forest fire, barbecues are only allowed in the firepits provided.

Local attractions

A stay at Trabunco Alto puts you in Patagonia’s Lanín National Park, a region of snowy summits and glacial lakes. The protected area is criss-crossed with trails through forests of rare monkey puzzle trees for easy hiking, and more challenging routes into the mountainous foothills, while experienced climbers can have a go at summiting Lanín volcano. Horse riding and canoeing are popular activities in the park, and you can try fly fishing for salmon and trout on the Chimehuin River. There’s windsurfing and water-skiing on emerald-green Lácar Lake (half an hour’s drive), lined with beaches like Playa Quila Quina (55 minutes) for cooling dips with mountain views. And in summer, Cerro Chapelco ski resort (15 minutes) transforms into a scenic hotspot for paragliding and mountain biking. To get a feel for local culture, visit the town of Junín de los Andes (an hour and 10 minutes) to tour its contemporary landmark, the Santuario Nuestra Señora de las Nieves y Beata Laura Vicuña, and learn about pre-Columbian indigenous peoples at the Museo Mapuche de Cañete.
