  • Quiet and simple riverside site near Lake Bala in Snowdonia
  • 10 minutes to fishing and a pub with food; Lake Bala railway next door
  • Barmouth beach 40 mins; Zipworld Fforest 45 mins; Portmeirion 50 mins
Steam trains, fishing lakes and mountain slopes all minutes away on this riverside site in north Wales. At Bwch yn Uchaf Camping and Caravanning Park, they know what people come for: it’s a simple, quiet site, where you can set yourself up in seclusion by the River Twrch or the Bala Lake steam railway and enjoy the open skies. You might wake up to a steam engine chuffing by (there’s four a day), but apart from that it’s the sheep, the birds and the river. However lost in nature you want to get, it’s handy to know that this site in the Snowdonia National Park is 10 minutes’ walk to a pub with grub. You could try catching your own fish supper on the nearby Tegid/Bala lake (with day permits), teeming with wild brown trout, grayling, eels and seasonal salmon. Assuming you couldn’t watch the engines of the Lake Bala railway chugging past without a twinge of curiosity, you can catch this lovingly restored narrow gauge line right by the site for a slow, steam-powered circuit of the lake. It’s a great way to see the area whilst conserving your energy for all that active stuff you’re bound to get up to.

Local attractions

If you’ve developed an addiction to steam railways in fine scenery, the renowned Blaenau Ffestiniog and Snowdon Mountain Railways are in easy reach (40 minutes’ and an hour and a quarter’s drive, respectively); the latter takes you to the top of Mount Snowdon if you'd rather puff there by train than under your own steam. The area is laced with walks and bike trails, many taking you up Snowdon the hard (but rewarding) way; Mount Aran is not a lot smaller and paths to its summit start close to the site. For heights of a different kind, Zipworld has two bases in the area, Fforest (45 minutes) and Slate Caverns (50 minutes), both offering record-breaking zip rides in grand surrounds. If you prefer your feet planted firmly on the ground, the village of Portmeirion is 50 minutes away; a remarkable little slice of Italy built on Welsh soil, and of sci-fi history, too. For a more traditional take on the Welsh seaside, Barmouth beach with its candy floss and donkey rides is 40 minutes away. Cross the estuary for views from the bridge, then take the coastal path round to Fairbourne for another fine railway trip, ending in a ferry ride back to Barmouth.
