  • Well-maintained site on a farm 10 minutes' drive from Abergele
  • Half an hour's drive from Snowdonia; 10 minutes from the coast
  • Large pitches and smart heated modern bathroom block
Coming to Conwy with a plan to cram in as many castles, country walks and coastal antics as poss, plus a bit of chillout time? A berth at Bryn Ffanigl Ganol Caravan and Camping Park will see you sorted for a bit of both. The views from this fab family-run farm site are full-on north Wales countryside – all hills, woods and green fields – and there’s a generous swathe of space on each pitch for settling in to stare at the scenery. The owners aren't just relying on that outlook to keep guests smiling, however – they’ve put a lot of effort into refining their amenities too, which include a smart modern bathroom block with underfloor heating throughout (no chilly toes here), accessible facilities and a washing-up area. But you haven't come all this way to loaf on site… not when the site is within 30 minutes' drive of the north coast, Snowdonia National Park, a zoo and a clutch of castles (of course – Wales loves a castle). Getting out and about to all of this is a cinch, as Bryn Ffanigl Ganol is a leisurely three miles from the A55 (aka the North Wales Expressway). Even easier is getting out for a walk, as there are plenty of paths in the immediate surrounds (excellent news for dogs needing to stretch their paws). Sort post-stroll snacks with a trip to the supermarket or shops in Abergele, a 10-minute drive away.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The campsite was quaint and cozy, offering spacious, flat, and well-maintained pitches. The restroom facilities were contemporary, hygienic, and comfortably heated. Incorporating a small play area for children would be a delightful enhancement. Caution: Avoid using satellite navigation; instead, consult the bottom of your booking confirmation email. I neglected to do so and ended up navigating my caravan through some extremely tight and twisty roads. Fortunately, there was no approaching traffic, and I managed to get through unscathed.

Disliked: The WiFi service was inconsistent. A welcome kit detailing local activities and dining options would have been a thoughtful touch.

Electric grass pitch (small)

Liked: Great position to tour the area from. Good sized pitches with water.

Disliked: No hair dryers. No electric shaver points. Lack of hooks near the sinks and a shelf in the showers. Radio in the the toilets is a little loud late at nights. WiFi not very good.

Liked: Location was good and view. Toilet and showers were amazing.

Disliked: Had to remove some rubbish off pitch before pitching. Even though had heavy rain days prior tent field just didn’t look as maintained as caravan side.

Electric grass pitch (large)

Liked: We were on pitch 37, no protection from the wind. Could of done with a road up to pitch 40 as the grass was very wet and we had to park our car in a car park away from tent. Toilet and shower block was best we have ever used. warm, clean, plenty of room and music playing. Washing up area had 2 sinks with plenty of hot water. Laundry room with washing machine and dryer, plus a fridge and freezer if you needed to use it. Dog wash around the back of building. Our pitch had its own electric hookup point with our own tap. On our second night there were gusts of winds between 37 and 50 km/h, our tent became a kite and all our guidelines and pegs were blown out of the ground. Luckily for us the owners of the site had spare pegs and other campers helped us to secure the tent down with appropriate 4 pegs to each guideline. Make sure if in a tent to take your wellies and check weather forecast for this area.

Disliked: Couldn't use the disabled toilet has the door was locked.

Route directions

Using a satnav is not recommended, as they often take you through narrow country lanes. From Abergele town centre, head west towards Llanddulas. At the end of the castle wall, turn left for Rhyd-y-Foel. Go through the village, then take the second lane on the left, signposted for the site. The park entrance is the first turning on the left.

Local attractions

Can't wait for the coast? It's 10 minutes' drive to Abergele’s beach or 15 to get to the sandy stretch at Colwyn Bay. If you like a bit of activity while you're there, there’s a seafront cycle path in Abergele, or you could tackle one of the great walks around the Great Orme headland in Llandudno (20 minutes). A cable car and tramway head to the summit if your legs don't fancy the hike. A short way back from the coast (20 minutes’ drive) is the place to meet all manner of animals at the Welsh Mountain Zoo; a similar length of drive should get you to the National Trust-owned Bodnant Garden to stroll through 80 acres of plants gathered from around the world. If it's castles you're after, tick several off your list with visits to Bodelwyddan (15 minutes), Rhuddlan (20 minutes), Conwy (20 minutes) and Caernarfon (45 minutes). Snowdonia National Park's a splendid place for a day or few too – head to Llanrwst (half an hour) or Betws-y-Coed (35 minutes) for walks, Gwydir Forest Park (50 minutes) for mountain biking or Adventure Parc Snowdonia (half an hour) for gorge walking, paddleboarding and a surfing lake.
