  • Remote forest safari tents 10 miles from Snowdonia National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Lake Vyrnwy; 45 minutes to Bala and Dolgellau
  • Private facilities including kitchen, hot shower and eco-toilet
Roads, noise, other people, the modern world – whatever you want to get away from, plan your escape route to Mid Wales, and a stay at Matilda's Field in Dyfnant Forest. All around is one of the few areas in the UK you can truly describe as remote wilderness: the edge of Snowdonia National Park is 10 miles to the west, and the dark-sky expanse of the Cambrian mountains is to the south. Even the nearest road is three and a half miles away. But just because you’re getting away from it all, that doesn’t mean you'll be roughing it – not at all. The large safari tents are kitted out with bedrooms, kitchen facilities, hot shower, sink, eco toilet and a cool little urinal. There’s also a covered veranda to extend the indoor-outdoor living vibe (and keep any mucky boots out of the way). On the site, there’s plenty of space to walk, run, play or relax and you’re welcome to bring your dog along. Dyfnant Forest is criss-crossed by trails for walkers to explore, and the Dyfnant Rainbow Trails have been especially designed for horse riders. 20 minutes’ drive away is Lake Vyrnwy, home to a distinctive fairytale castle water tower and a hub for walking, wildlife watching, stargazing and all sorts of other outdoor activities. Because Matilda’s Field is so wonderfully remote, you’ll want to bring food and drink enough for your whole stay. There is, however, a small convenience store and petrol station about 10 minutes’ drive away if you do need to stock up on necessities. Please note that there is no mains electricity in the accommodation, but there is solar and oil lamp lighting and a 12-volt circuit to charge a mobile phone.

Canol y Cae 2 bedroom safari tent

Liked: Enjoyed every second of the holiday, Mike was friendly and informative about the local area and what to do. The safari tent itself was perfect, cosy and felt very homely. And the location, well that was just breathtaking. Falling asleep to the sound of nature and the rain is just dreamy, like this whole stay was. Would come back and stay again in a heartbeat, hands down, the best staycation I have been on to date!

Brig y Bryn 3 bedroom safari tent

Liked: We had the best time at Matildas field. The owner Mike was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The tent had everything you could need, comfy beds, all utensils, hot water bottles, binoculars for the gorgeous view and incredible wdlife all around. My daughter loved the cabin bed which she claimed as her own and spent a lot of the time whilst we were in the tent. A safe was a really nice touch to put your valuable in whilst out and about. The stars on a clear night was incredible you could see the milkyway! The tent, bathroom and veranda were exceptionally clean and maintained everywhere looked new. Will definitely come back to explore snowdonia again!

Canol y Cae 2 bedroom safari tent

Liked: A beautiful secluded location in the embrace of Dyfnant Forest with spectacular views of the Welsh countryside to the front. the Safari tent we stayed was very clean and well maintained, it was well equipped with lovely touches including a rum and raisins banjo made by the owners father. Although there is no mains electricity (it is a tent in a field after all) they do have solar powered lighting and plenty of lamps for the dark evenings. Heating is provided via a gas fire which kept the tent lovely and warm on cold nights. Water is via a bore hole on the property, it is very fresh and safe to drink and there is hot water on demand for showering or washing up - use the water mindfully though as the the owners rely on the supply too. There is a well equipped kitchen with a dual gas hob for cooking complete with a whistling kettle! a very comfortable leather sofa with plenty of throws and cushions and a large farmhouse dinner table with chairs. there is a large cool box provided and the owners will refresh the ice packs everyday. though i would recommend taking your own cool box also. From the tent you can walk on access roads through much of the forest and there a several circular routes that will bring you back to the tent. A short drive away is lake Vyrnwy which is spectacular. The owners are very welcoming and always on call. relaxing and unwinding here was effortless.

Canol y Cae 2 bedroom safari tent

Liked: Lovely welcoming hosts, tent was very clean and cosy. All cooking utensils, pots, pans provided. Home away from home with the kids. Was also very lucky to have a signal up there so you could use phone and Internet.

Disliked: Sat nav is a bit useless as it's very rural so got a little lost but very well sign posted once you know what your looking for.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Rebecca, Thanks for the review! Yes, Sat-nav's can be confusing round here as we are off the main road and on forestry tracks. We do send out detailed directions to hopefully help. Hope to see you again soon! Best Wishes Mike & Donna

Local attractions

The main reason why folk choose a holiday somewhere like Matilda’s Field is to spend lots of time out in the open. There are opportunities to get active all around, but Lake Vyrnwy (20 minutes’ drive) is the nearest place where it’s all available in one convenient spot. Cycle hire, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, abseiling, archery, shooting, fishing – take your pick. Further afield, the historic market towns of Machynlleth, Dolgellau and Bala are all about 45 minutes’ drive away through some gorgeous natural scenery, and there are more great walks to be had around each one as well. And how about filling your lungs with fresh sea air instead of fresh mountain air for a day? The beaches at Fairbourne, Barmouth and Tywyn are all driveable in about an hour and 10 minutes. You might also head out for a ramble on the Wales Coast Path or a ride on the Talyllyn Railway while you're over by the coast.
