  • Peaceful family-run Mid Wales site in the grounds of a watermill
  • A 10-minute walk to a vineyard; a 25-minute drive to the Stiperstones
  • Accessible family shower room; farm-run ice cream station next door
From acting like a wine aficionado on the local vineyard to hiking around the historic sites on the Stiperstones… Millers Rest Campsite will get you recharging your batteries in no time. This place is a family-run site in Powys, on the grounds of the 17th-century Bacheldre Watermill and 10 minutes’ drive away from the Shropshire Hills. That means that sublime scenery’s a given, including mature trees, farmlands and streams surrounding the site. It’s really quite remote… all the more privacy and peace for your lot. Despite all this, there’s no need to give up your creature comforts. The site has free showers including an accessible shower room (suited to larger families) and a heated toilet block. There’s also a dishwashing area and waste disposal area to ensure that you keep your grassy pitches nice and tidy, primed for more relaxation. As for tracking down some tasty eats, well, there’s a homemade ice cream station next door to the site, where the flavours are made from dairy fresh from their farm. Thankfully, there's no shortages of pubs in the surrounding area either, with popular spots in Bishop’s Castle (15 minutes’ drive, and a good place for indie shops and cafés too) and several more pubs within 10 minutes’ drive of the site. Closer by, there’s a hotel bar serving food (five minutes’ drive) and Churchstoke (under five minutes’ drive) has a food shop, petrol station, launderette and café for more snacks, afternoon teas and the like.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Really good powerful hot showers . Plenty of hooks to hang things on which is so often missing in many campsites. Washing up facilities were great too with plenty of hot water. Good level pitches.

Disliked: Bridge over to the pond around the corner of the site was broken with a few plastic bottles littered around it. It didn’t look safe to walk across . If you have kids , you wouldn’t be able to let them roam free .

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Small, low-key place with good facilities. Friendly welcome. Interesting old mill buildings and millpond.

Disliked: The grass on the pitches was rather too long, possibly because it was close to the end of the season (mid-September). The footbridges around the millpond need attention.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Friendly owner. Toilets and showers are new and lots of hot water too. Good washing up facilities with sponges and w/up liquid provided. Nice flat camping field with pitches spaced well apart. Safe site for children to play, as it’s away from the road and small enough to keep an eye on them. There is an old restored flour mill on site (yours are available) and homemade pizza available on Friday night. Excellent Wi-Fi. A five minute walk to diary farm with homemade ice cream, milk shakes and milk to buy. Ten minute walk to a vineyard with tours and a great cafe.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Great little campsite. Reserved based on reviews of clean toilet/shower facilities. Well they were probably the cleanest we've seen. The owners try to spread out pitches so space is kept between campers where possible. Will happily go again if we decide to camp in area.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: I love this campsite so much! Have stayed previously solo camping, so brought my partner along this time to "show it off". Nice, chilled site. Perfect location between ice cream farm and a vineyard. Will definitely stay again. If staying on a Friday be sure to pre-order your pizza! the BEST pizza we have tasted made onsite using their own flour. Pizza base is perfection. I also enjoy the information sheets by the pot wash of local walks and sites. We visited the stone circle and Montgomery village/castle on the information sheets and both were well worth the visit.

Local attractions

While pubs are certainly one place to put back a few local ales, those of you who are a bigger fan of a glass of red or white will want to pay a visit to Kerry Vale Vineyard (10 minutes’ walk) to sample their flavours. There’s a brewery in Montgomery (10 minutes’ drive) for another drinks-themed outing or perhaps a tour of the town's castle, independent shops, cafés or visitor centre. What’s the cocktail in Welshpool (20 minutes)? Well, it might be the heritage railway, modern art or the canal works. Meanwhile, at Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (35 minutes), you’ll stumble upon a tasty mix of moorland walks, mountain biking trails and a stream through the valley, all owned by the National Trust. Like to hone in on some historic sites while you’re on your holidays too? Well, there’s Clun Castle (25 minutes) not too far away and a Bronze Age stone circle at Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle (15 minutes). More historic sites litter the way around the five and a half-mile hilly hike around the Stiperstones (25 minutes).
