  • On a working farm in the Highlands, surrounded by thick forests
  • Wildlife haven with woodland walk leading to a waterfall
  • Buy venison, boar, ostrich and kangaroo sausages on site
A fan of fresh air, rural rambles and stunning views? You’ll be in high spirits in the Highlands, where the peaceful surrounds supply stacks of forest/lake/mountain views to coo over, and heaps of trails to hike, bike or clamber your way through the stunning landscapes. Also a fan of finishing up your days with a hot shower, a tasty dinner and a flop in front of the TV? Then you’ll be stoked with the setup at Strathfillan Wigwams, on a Perthshire working farm between Crianlarich and Tyndrum in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Walkers can wander straight out onto a woodland walk from the site to the local waterfall and river; canyoning, mountain biking and rafting are all in the surrounds for folks who’d like to boost their adrenaline levels, and Loch Lomond cruises and whisky sipping await for those who prefer something a little more laidback. More far-flung ventures can be had by public transport, which scoots guests off to both the nearest villages. A TV room is back at base, along with a farm shop with a range of fab fresh produce – not just your standard bits and pieces but an exotic selection of wild boar, ostrich, kangaroo and venison sausages as well as camel or zebra steaks. Crank up a campfire or borrow a grill if it’s outdoor cooking weather; if not, there’s a fully-equipped kitchen and a couple of dining areas on site too. Bacon rolls and takeaway hot drinks are served up in the shop for an easy brekkie.

Local attractions

Quiet days? Get your boots on for scenic hikes or bring rods and pick up permits on site for fishing in the Fillan river. More active? An hour or so’s drive gets you to rafting, canyoning, off-road safaris, paintballing and a Go Ape adventure park. If you’re a scenery seeker, you’ve certainly come to the right place – especially if you love lochs (and lots of them). Famed Loch Lomond is about 20 minutes away (although you’ll need to keep on trucking for a further half hour if you’d like a cruise), and you may also like to take a look at Loch Tay (25 minutes), Loch Earn (half an hour), Loch Katrine (an hour)… Not been lucky with the wildlife while wandering? Take off to the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre (50 minutes) or the Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre (55 minutes). And although you’ll see many a tree on your travels, it’s worth making a stopoff at the Fortingall Yew Tree (50 minutes) – it’s rumoured to be the most ancient tree in the whole land (possibly the entire continent).
