  • Self-catering ‘tiny house’ cabins in the Cairngorms National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Loch Insh; 35 minutes from Cairngorm Mountain
  • Kitchen and ensuite in the cabins; shops and cafés a short walk away
With cosy cabins known as 'tiny houses' in the Cairngorms National Park, Kingussie Garden Cabins is a sensible and splendid place indeed for a stopover or a somewhat lengthier stay. ‘Tiny houses’ they sure are: despite being compact they’re all fully self-contained, with a kitchen area and an ensuite bathroom. That means that you’ll have somewhere to prep your packed lunches (including some Scottish specialities, perhaps?) and freshen up before tackling activities around Speyside or out in the Cairngorms National Park. Loch Insh is 15 minutes’ drive away for sailing, kayaking, raft building and a host of other activities. In fact, this is a very excellent spot for travellers who like the outdoors, whether that’s cycling, golfing or watersports. Level up your munro bagging too (in other words, topping as many Scottish peaks as possible) – there are many mountains within driving distance of the site. These cute little cabins sleep two guests in a bunk bed. There’s wifi available to plot out your plan of action, and a pretty gravel garden where you can peruse maps or just take in the fresh air. Kingussie train station is five minutes’ walk away for ventures further afield. For shops, cafés and restaurants, Kingussie high street is five minutes’ walk away from the site.

Cabin

Liked: Cabin was clean, quiet and perfect. Less than 5 min walking distance from Kingussie station. Was perfect for an overnight stay for us. Staff was especially kind as they let us keep our bags in the office after we checked-out so we could go for a hike in the area. Very friendly staff. Would definitely stay again.

Disliked: Nothing - everything was great

Local attractions

It's the fresh-air activities that draw most folk to this area. To get started, look to Loch Morlich (half an hour's drive ) for a cycle, a paddle in a kayak, sailing or windsurfing, or to Loch Insh (15 minutes) for sailing, kayaking, archery, raft building and other activities. Up higher, the Cairngorm Mountain (35 minutes) has skiing and snowboarding runs along with a funicular railway. Those who prefer two boots to two skis can stick to hikes in the Uath Lochans (20 minutes) or Tay Forest Park (from 40 minutes). You might have a long list of animals you’ve spotted on your wanders out and around those parts. That list will be even longer after visiting the Highland Wildlife Park (10 minutes), a 105-hectare safari park and zoo. And to fill in any gaps in your knowledge of local history? Try a visit to the Highland Folk Museum (five minutes), an open-air museum all about Highland life from the 1700s to the 1950s.
