  • Luxury Highland site with a legend attached
  • Half an hour from sea fishing, dolphin spotting and Loch Ness cruises
  • Many famed whisky distilleries within an hour's drive
Here’s a magical spot. Or maybe it’s a mythical one…. Tis said that Macbeth’s Hillock, half an hour’s drive from Inverness, is where the future King of Scotland met with the three witches and first learned his dreadful destiny. Cast thoughts of blasted heaths and witches’ brews from your mind, though, for this is a flower-filled site with country views, comfortable accommodation in pods with ensuite bathrooms, and friendly flocks of chickens and sheep next door. If you do want to mutter prophecies over a cauldron, you’re quite welcome to do so, and there are firepits on every outdoor terrace for the cooking up of potions or more practical stuff like sausages. (And if you don’t know a good spell for conjuring up groceries, you can visit the shops in Nairn, 10 minutes away, or dine out at its restaurants and takeaways.) While the witches might not have existed, Macbeth certainly did... and the coastline of the Moray Firth is dotted with reminders of Scotland’s proud and sometimes turbulent history. A couple of minutes’ drive away, the rose-hued and multi-turreted Brodie Castle has been home to the local clan chiefs since the 12th century, and it’s a 15-minute trip to the seat of the real thanes of Cawdor.

Pod 4 camping pod

Liked: Lovely family run site, very small and quiet. Child and dog friendly, fire pits and benches for each cabin. Large area with a small sand pit and football goals for children to play freely. All cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils are provided. Loced the wee honesty shop for snacks or essentials you've forgotten. Owners were lovely and friendly and stopped to make sure we were OK and to chat. Great base for exploring the surrounding area

Pod 1 camping pod

Liked: Loved the fact it had everything you needed and that we only had to bring bedding and towels. The cabins are warm and cosy and the kids loved feeding the new lambs! Will definitely be back :)

Disliked: Not really a dislike as such but would’ve been good to have Wi-Fi and would happily have paid extra for this.

Local attractions

Half an hour away, a more recent 19th-century stronghold sits on top of Inverness; like the former army base of Fort George and the Highlanders’ Museum, it’s worth a wander, especially when finished off with boat cruises down Loch Ness, looking out for you-know-who. If you’re mad keen on finding Nessie, or just interested in the life of the loch, make sure you pay a trip to the visitor centre at Drumnadrochit, an hour away. A number of walking and biking paths depart from there around the lake shores and the ruins of Castle Urquhart. Sea fishing and dolphin spotting trips depart from Inverness and you can learn more about the local cetacean residents on dry land at the Scottish Dolphin Centre (50 minutes). Heading inland and upwards, it’s an hour and 15 minutes to CairnGorm Mountain, for the UK’s highest funicular railway rides, hikes through the national park wilderness and visits to the antlered residents of the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre. In need of refreshment? Scotch distilleries are thick on the ground in these parts for tours, tastings and purchasing: it’s a 45-minute trip to sample the spirits of Knockando, while the houses of Glenlivet and Tomintoul are both an hour away.
