  • Dog-friendly site in Aviemore, on the edge of Cairngorms National Park
  • Glenmore Forest Park and Highland Wildlife Park 15 minutes’ drive
  • Playground and ping-pong table; food van and covered dining area
On the north-western fringes of Cairngorms National Park, a short distance from the town of Aviemore (five minutes by car or a half-hour walk on the Aviemore Orbital foot/cycle path), Oakwood Caravan and Camping Park is a great base from which to explore the Scottish Highlands – with your canine companion (a welcome guest here, so long as it is kept on a leash) by your side. A range of accommodations awaits at this peaceful spot accessed via an electronic gate entry system. After setting up (or before, even…), take a good look around: you’re immersed in ancient woodland here, and surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery. If you’re travelling with kids, they might enjoy running around on the vast lawn or making new friends in the playground or at the ping-pong table (bats and balls are available at reception). And if they want to switch things up a little, the Aviemore Kart Raceway is a five-minute walk away. The grown-ups can have their own play time at Spey Valley Golf Course (five minutes’ drive), or seek rest and relaxation on a leisurely walk along nearby woodland paths. Don’t forget your swimsuit if you’re heading to Glenmore Forest Park (15 minutes), where Loch Morlich has a sandy beach (the highest in Britain). Swimming is popular here, and there’s a watersports centre where you can rent canoes and paddleboards. Back at the site, a food van serves burgers and snacks that you can devour in the covered seating area; if you prefer to have a barbecue, be aware that it must be raised off the ground (for provisions, Aviemore has independent shops and supermarkets). Also on site are a washing-up area and a launderette, plus a toilet block with hot-water showers and facilities for disabled guests.

Ptarmigan camping pod

Liked: Pods were great. Very clean and well equipped. Beds were amazing but a bit high for young one. Plenty space to make space for sleeping elsewhere.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The shower and toilets block is like none I've ever seen on any UK campsite. Super clean, super roomy, super well maintained. Hot water available for washing dishes, lovely separate laundry room with washer and drier. Everything is very neat, clean and top notch. Staff is friendly and very helpful. Lovely big play area for the kids. Great location - the shops are just down the road. Rolls Royce of campsites

Disliked: Some noise from the nearby motorway - didn't bother us, but the other family we were with were affected. The electric hook up pitches are quite flat but because everybody pitches up on exactly same spot it is hard mud rather than grass. Was harder to pitch up and the tent got really messy because of all the dust and muck from the dirt underneath.
