  • Luxury pods just outside Balloch village, overlooking Loch Lomond
  • Balloch Castle Country Park 10 minutes’ drive; Ben Lomond 45 minutes
  • Shower room, well-equipped kitchen, underfloor heating and smart TV
This is what you get when you crank glamping up a notch – or three. With a dreamy Dunbartonshire location overlooking Loch Lomond, Stoneymollan Luxury Pods, on the outskirts of the village of Balloch, is home to fully equipped micro lodges that can accommodate up to two adults and two young children, with ample living space. The pods are insulated to keep those loch breezes at bay – and they have underfloor heating, so you can wander about in socks, embracing a real hygge vibe. There’ll be no braving the elements to get to the loo, as they have a shower room with a toilet (towels are provided). When it comes to cooking, you can whip up your favourite meals in the kitchen, which has a hob, a microwave and a fridge, plus pots, crockery, and glasses. Bed linen, duvets and pillows for the double bed (and the sofa bed, if you’re travelling as a family) are also supplied, along with a smart TV so you don’t have to miss a single episode of your favourite Netflix series while you’re here. Having said that, with views like these, you might well prefer to turn the TV off and hang out on the decking area, perhaps firing up the barbecue for an outdoor dinner. If you think the surrounding landscape is spectacular to look at (and it is), just you wait till you’re completely immersed in it. You can join the Three Lochs Way and the John Muir Way trails at the end of the site’s drive, and explore Stoneymollan Muir, the area of moorland west of the lake. If you’re feeling energetic, there are a handful of Munros within a 45-minute drive, including Ben Lomond and Ben Vane.

Local attractions

The underwater environments at Sea Life Loch Lomond Aquarium (five minutes’ drive) include a Lochs of Scotland tank, highlighting native species, and a tropical ocean tunnel. There are also rockpools where kids can get up close and personal with starfish and shrimp, plus a trio of cheeky otters. There is more wildlife (of the winged type this time) at Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre (five minutes). Here you can have close encounters with owls and hawks, and learn about other resident raptors and their habits during flying shows held in a woodland arena. Kids might like to spend some time looking for magical winged creatures on the Fairy Trail at Balloch Castle Country Park (10 minutes). There’s lots more to see in these 200 acres of woodland and parkland on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, including a series of formal gardens.
