  • A 15-minute drive from Berwick-upon-Tweed and sandy beaches
  • Spacious area for playing and dog-walking, and spectacular views
Ah, Scotland… the land of castles and windswept scenery, as well as the spiritual home of golf. Want to experience a bit of both, while also having a peaceful break? Settle in for stays at Foulden Hagg, a family-friendly Berwickshire site five minutes' drive from the teeny village of Foulden. The site’s well-placed for outdoorsy getaways: it’s a drive of half an hour or so from the edge of Northumberland National Park for biking and hiking (and a path that leads along the famed Hadrian’s Wall), as well as stunning scenery to soak up and plenty of heritage sites to visit. It’s also 20 minutes from the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for more of the same, plus a healthy dose of wildlife watching and watersports. And that golf? On that front, this site’s a real hole in one: there are eight golf courses within 20 miles of the site, with the closest just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed, about 10 minutes away. When rest time is needed, the site has lots of space to spread out in and some fab views towards the Cheviot Hills to appreciate. Canine chum or kids along for the hols? A spacious green field is set aside for dog walking and play time – plenty of room to get any remaining energy out before bedtime.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Beautifully peaceful and quiet, stunning views, and friendly other campers.

Disliked: We're new to campervanning, but we booked a hardstanding pitch to avoid the risk of getting stuck in soggy grass (as we had on our first night at a different campsite). We thought hard-standing pitches were on hardcore/concrete/tarmac, but the site was just grass. Fortunately we had no problem, but it might still be a good idea to make this clear to other campers in future.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Peaceful, very spacious pitches Lovely countryside views. Dog friendly, large dog exercise area.

Disliked: Elsan was dirty, awkward to use with an ill fitting hose. 10amp electric was split with adjacent pitch and kept tripping (neighbour was a nightmare but that's not the site's fault)

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: A fabulous place to stay. This is our second time staying here. A single line of pitches all with a wonderful view over the tweed towards the cheviot hills. A peaceful site with really friendly owners on the edge of their farm. They welcomed our spaniels as much as they did us. A perfect spot to pitch a self contained caravan.

Disliked: There is nothing to dislike

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Quiet spot with nice views over open countryside in a field. Water and power on most sites and chemical toilet disposal point by main entrance.

Disliked: Hose connection in chemical toilet area leaks and sprays you with water if not careful.

Local attractions

Berwick-upon-Tweed, 15 minutes’ drive from base, is a top spot to start explores hereabouts. The seaside town has sandy beaches to stroll along, museums to dig about in, an art gallery and a performing arts centre for culture fixes, and castle ruins to clamber over. When it comes to those Scottish castles, there are a couple to visit within easy reach – Bamburgh Castle is 35 minutes away, and it’s 45 minutes to Alnwick Castle, which eagle-eyed movie buffs may recognise from the early Harry Potter films. Prefer a little more grandiosity? The Edwardian Manderston House is 15 minutes from base, and the spectacular Floors Castle is within 45 minutes. Outdoorsy types seeking to continue fresh-air adventures can do so with a jaunt across to the island of Lindisfarne (30 minutes' drive) to view the priory and castle, or by hiking or walking at Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre (55 minutes). Those keen to recreate Pixar’s Brave are in luck too – it’s 50 minutes from base to the Scottish Archery Centre. If city days are on the cards, guests have a choice to make: it’s an hour and 10 minutes’ drive to Edinburgh for Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Arthur’s Seat and tons of foodie-friendly spots, or an hour and 20 minutes to Newcastle’s Angel of the North, Roman forts, museums and shopping. Or, why not both…?
