An authentic taste of real Bavarian history… in the Co. Leitrim countryside? It’s an unusual mix indeed. but one that results in a truly gorgeous place to stay at Lakeland Lodge, set in four private rural acres on the banks of Lough Melvin, a kilometre from Kinlough. There’s quite the history behind this building – in fact, it’s been more than 300 years since it was originally built by farmers in Germany. So how did it end up here? Well, a little over 20 years ago a well-known German/Austrian architect meticulously dismantled it and transported it to Leitrim to rebuild it. And you can certainly see why they picked this spot to rebuild in, as the views over the lake and Dartry mountains are quite stunning. The lodge’s design, with balconies on each floor, means that you’ll be able to take full advantage of the scenery at all times of day – from alfresco breakfast through to an evening glass of bubbly in the hot tub. The lodge may be quite some age now, but the interior is certainly a cosy and comfy place to be, with a mix of period details and modern features. Inside, there are two bedrooms (one with a stove to keep you extra-toasty at night), a well-equipped kitchen and a period-style living room with comfy sofas, a TV and a fireplace. With huge windows as part of the design you should be able to admire those views even while staying nice and warm indoors. Reckon your dog might just like to have a snooze by that fireplace as well? Good news for travelling hounds – Lakeland Lodge welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Local attractions

It may be tempting simply to stay put and gaze out at the surroundings from your gorgeous lodge, but it really is worth getting out and about to see more of the area – perhaps following the trails around Lough Melvin (next to the lodge), climbing up to the Green Canyon viewpoint (15 minutes’ drive) or heading up to Glencar Waterfall (half an hour). And the coast isn’t far off here either, so you may like to head to Bundoran (five minutes) for a round of sea-view golf or a day of surfing (or a day on the Waterworld waterslides if the weather’s not good). Clifftop walks around Mullaghmore (15 minutes) and sea angling trips from Rosses Point (half an hour) might also be on the cards. Climbing, canyoning, kayaking and beach horse riding trips are also available in the surrounding area; if you need a bit of calming down after all that activity, perhaps a gin tour at Boatyard Distillery (35 minutes) will be just the tonic…
