  • Friendly pick-your-own fruit farm site on the outskirts of Swindon
  • A 35-minute drive from the Cotswolds; 15 minutes to the town centre
  • Playground, nature trail and animals; takeaway café
How to describe life on a fruit farm? Well, after picking a patch among the farm animals and fruit fields at Lotmead Farm, you’ll quickly learn that life is pretty peachy. Squeeze the day at this family-friendly and dog-friendly site on the outskirts of Swindon, 15 minutes’ drive from the city centre and 35 minutes to the characterful Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and begin by picking strawberries for breakfast (when in season) or meeting and greeting pygmy goats, alpacas and guinea pigs in the farm enclosures (during farm opening hours). A convenient stop off the M4, A419 and A420, you’ll be well-set for a simple stay within reach of Swindon’s city centre. Proudly no-frills, this site will take you back to the joy of the basic Wiltshire countryside with no hot water and just toilets on site. Keeping things simple means all the more time to walk the site’s half-mile nature footpath, ending at a lake and bird hide. Perhaps pack for a lakeside picnic full of local food and baked treats from the small farm shop or takeaway café on site (available during farm opening hours). Save room for an afters of berries picked from the fruit farm, of course (charges apply and dependent upon season). If the kids are still raring to go, there’s also an outdoor play area on site. A barbecue will likely help them to unwind… source any missing ingredients from a supermarket within five minutes’ drive (several pubs within the same distance, for when you feel like dining out).

Local attractions

Retail therapy? Swindon town centre (15 minutes’ drive) has a selection of shops and a designer outlet (15 minutes) for bargain buys. The town has two sides though, also keeping nice green areas such as Coate Water Country Park (five minutes) for angling, bird hides and wildlife-rich woodlands. The adjoining golf course (10 minutes) would make a nice stop-off if you want to perfect your swing. Join the Ridgeway Trail (10 minutes) for a nature trail. Or perhaps head north into the Cotswolds (35 minutes), if boating, hiking or canoeing your way around hillside villages and towns sounds like your idea of a great day out. In the Cotswolds, there's also the Cotswold Water Park (25 minutes), great for a go at waterskiing, paddleboarding or a bounce around large inflatables. Back on land, the Cotswolds Wildlife Park & Gardens (35 minutes) will reunite you with the plant and animal world. If you still have a yearning for the water, Bourton-on-the-Water (40 minutes) combines mellow canals with mazes, model villages and a motoring museum. In search of more metropolitan sights? Cirencester, Bath, Oxford, Gloucester and Cheltenham are all within an hour’s drive.
