  • Secluded site on a small welcoming Somerset working farm
  • In the Avalon Marshes nature reserves, five miles from Glastonbury
  • Riverside wildlife haven with firepit for each pitch
What a spot for wildlife lovers… Station Farm is a small family-run Somerset farm on the edge of Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve and situated between the Ham Wall and Westhay Moor Reserves (3,700 acres of reclaimed wetland collectively known as the Avalon Marshes). Bring your binoculars along for a stay here – you’re likely to spot all sorts of bird life (including cranes, egrets, birds of prey and kingfishers) around here, and there are several hides within a short walk for those who’d like to settle in for some serious spotting. If birdwatching’s not your thing, look out instead for otters or head out straight from the farm onto footpaths and bike routes across the reserves (including the Bittern Trail, which goes all the way to Glastonbury, five miles away). Just next to the farm is a river that’s fab for kayaking, paddleboarding, wild swims and fishing (permit required). Sticking to dry land, there’s plenty of space for kids to run about and greet the farm animals (ponies, sheep, pigs, donkeys and free-range poultry). Each pitch is provided with a barbecue/firepit (with logs and kindling available to buy) so you’ll also have space to keep warm once evening falls. This is an off-grid site so it’s a good idea to bring a torch along; toilets, showers, drinking water and a covered washing-up area are a short walk from each pitch. For safety, there’s no parking on pitches but wheelbarrows are provided to help haul kit. (Parents, do be aware that there’s easy access to lakes, ditches and the river so you’ll still need to keep an eye on the kids.)

Forest School Camp non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The sense of community. The animals, the rope swing, trampoline. Facilities were clean and efficient, recycling on site, communal areas and kitchen. Fantastic hosts, so friendly and helpful. Solar lighting. We stayed in the Farm School and having the additional outside shelter was a huge plus, everywhere you looked there was something you hadn’t noticed yet, an absolute gem of a place!

Middle Ground non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We arrived at Station Farm having cycled 50 miles in blazing sunshine and we couldn't have asked for a better welcome, Bethan and Karl are amazing, so kind and considerate and really interesting to chat to. The site itself was very peaceful with great amenities and nice flat pitches. We ate at the Sheppey pub which is a couple of miles away, the food was excellent and well worth a visit. We will definitely be returning in the future and would highly recommend Station Farm without hesitation.

Liked: Lovely campsite, ran by the loveliest family. Station Farm is immaculately clean and so well thought out.The pitches were gorgeous with so much space, so private and so relaxing. They have fantastic fire pits which made the stay even better. A paradise for children with space to run around, animals, kayaking on the lake, trampoline, giant bus, swings, mud kitchen and more. Beth and Karl were absolutely lovely and it was a pleasure to spend time chatting with them. We'll be back soon, thanks again for a lovely time!

Middle Ground non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything ! Lovely location, great facilities, really nice hosts! We stayed 5 nights and had a lovely time. The children (8 & 11) loved feeding the lambs and playing on the tire swings and trampoline. We loved the fact they could roam safely on the site and we could sit by the fire pit with a beer! Carl and Bethan were so helpful - lending us blankets as we came slightly under equipped. The wash up area is probably the nicest I’ve used at a campsite. Sockets for charging phones and fridge (for the aforementioned beer) great touches. I think we will be back!

Liked: We had such a lovely weekend at Karl and Bethan’s farm. They welcomed us in and showed us around, making us feel at home instantly. The Farm is surrounded by Sheep, Pigs, Ducks, Chickens, Horses and more. The campsite set up was brilliant, they really thought of everything. There is a lounge area in an old stable for rainy days, a cleanup area and fridge. They also had a flower bed next to the kitchen with all sorts of herbs to use for cooking. We bought some eggs from them and locally made honey which was delicious. They provided old washing machine drums for fire pits with a grill top to cook on. We enjoyed a lovely BBQ in the evening after taking their kayaks out on the river for a bit where we pick loads of blackberries  There is also bathrooms and showers on site. It was a gorgeous weekend and we will definitely be telling everyone about Station Farm and hopefully we’ll be making a return at some point.

Local attractions

If you need to get your bearings, a good place to start is at the Avalon Marshes Visitor Centre (five minutes’ walk) – there’s a café here too, so you can plan your walks over a cup of coffee. Beyond your immediate surroundings, there’s plenty more to see – perhaps beginning with an outing to Glastonbury (10 minutes’ drive/half an hour’s cycle) to stroll through the town and visit the abbey and the tor. Wells (20 minutes’ drive) is another urban centre that’s worth a wander, particularly if you stop in at Europe’s first Gothic-style cathedral. For outdoor days, go for a hike around Cheddar Gorge (20 minutes) or hit the beach in Burnham-on-Sea (20 minutes). The West Somerset Railway (45 minutes) is a good option if you fancy seeing some of the scenery at a leisurely pace. Other ways to fill your days? Well, maybe delving into the caves at Wookey Hole (20 minutes), visiting Europe’s largest naval aviation collection at Fleet Air Arm Museum (half an hour) or checking out the stately home and safari park at Longleat (50 minutes)…
