  • Family-friendly site with a relaxed atmosphere on 100 acres of land
  • In the Mendip Hills, a five-minute bike ride from Thatchers Cider farm
  • Firepits and campfires encouraged; café-bar and outdoor activities
Fancy having the freedom to explore ancient woodland by day and settle in next to an open fire by night (but with the added bonus of hot showers and flushing loos)? Make Basecamp at Mendip Activity Centre your next spot for a getaway and all of the above shall be at your fingertips. This hidden park has an off-grid feel and it's a top choice for folk who like to keep moving: it’s got an outdoor activity centre a five-minute walk away with rock climbing, caving, skiing, tobogganing, frisbee golf, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting, bushcraft, mountain biking and axe throwing on offer (for an extra fee). All this plus 100 acres of land on site means outdoor playtimes, family ball games or just chilling out with a book on the grass are possible. That said, a leisure centre with a gym and indoor pool is under five minutes’ drive if you're in need of indoor activities. Back at the park, food and drinks are on hand at the pop-up tavern, which serves up local ciders and ales along with pizzas, loaded fries and jacket potatoes every evening (it's also the place for hot drinks and a full English brekkie on a Sunday morning). A 24-hour garage and well-stocked shop are 10 minutes away by car for those who need to sort snacks and self-catering food. A quick heads up if you’re planning on staying at the site: your tent or campervan needs to be under 2.7 metres high and no caravans or motorhomes are permitted because of access restrictions. Basecamp is accessed via a rural track which is driven at guests' own risk.

Liked: Toilets showers are great - brand new modern block

Disliked: How children were allowed to leave parents, wandering the huge site. Causing mahem around other areas, playing football, kicking ball into cars tents. Noise after 9pm still really loud with children from other areas of the site With four small children ( aged 12 months, 2, 6 and 9 )they are usually asleep at 9pm... 10pm noise was still extremely loud with other children causing loud nuisance screaming. Adults / teenagers having partys being loud until mid night No sign of any staff after 8pm even though they live onsite. I was not the only one complaining about these issues I did complain to check in staff

Liked: The campsite was very welcoming. Nice to have the shop close by and toilets were kept nice and clean.

Disliked: Our youngest was sick in the night and needed Calpol. We weren’t made aware of any medical support available and would have liked to visit a first aider.

Liked: Spacious and well maintained Shop onsite

Disliked: Noise curfew completely ignored. By numerous groups. Adults getting drunk, letting kids run ragid around other campers. Not control kids. Playing ball games by cars, hitting the cars with cricket balls, frisbees etc No consideration for anyone on camp How a few groups can spoil the experience for hundreds of others. Couldn't sleep due to noise. No staff around to implement the curfew hours People slamming car doors all night I think there should be a "quiet zone area" or something like that, which is something that could be done, as there are four areas. Or staff going around to check. At first I loved it, I soon become to hate it, I packed up and left earlier than planned. I would not return in a hurry When you come on holiday and have a packed day of excursions. good sleep is needed. Moving pitches isn't an option when there are lots of rowdy adults / kids. Dogs running loose Again alot of this is down to other camping groups, the worst being a huge group of 12 tents, around 20 adults and 20 children on area 4.

Liked: great place and very welcoming could not do enough for their guests

Disliked: no driving after dark, understand why but we was late arriving the first day, meaning had to go out for dinner and was worried and panicking about the curfew.

Local attractions

Most of your time at this park is sure to be taken up immersing yourself in the outdoor adventures of the Mendip Activity Centre or skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing at the Mendip Snowsport Centre (five minutes’ walk), but there’s also a range of other pursuits to consider while in the area. Set on cycling? Wheel your way along the Strawberry Line (around a 10-minute ride away) – this old railway between Cheddar and Yatton is now a family-friendly path. Make sure to drop by the Thatchers farm (five minutes) at the entry of the trail for sips of some famed cider. Check out the rest of the Mendips too, perhaps while meandering across Cheddar Gorge (15 minutes), Burrington Combe (10 minutes), or the lakes of Blagdon and Chew Valley (20 minutes). Outside of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, wander Weston-super-Mare’s seafront and pier while feasting on fish and chips (20 minutes) and give Bristol (half an hour) a little attention – particularly the city’s historic harbour, suspension bridge and SS Great Britain.
