  • Family-run Somerset farm site 10 minutes from the A303
  • On the Macmillan Way, 25 minutes' drive from Glastonbury
  • Firepits allowed; ice pack freezing and charging points in the house
Set down for a stay surrounded by the south Somerset countryside at Willowbank Farm. At this family-run and family-friendly site run by farmer Martin, you'll be well-based for a spot of stargazing, wildlife spotting and plenty of fresh air. It's on the route of the 290-mile Macmillan Way footpath, 25 minutes' drive from Glastonbury and 40 minutes from Longleat's safari and adventure park. (And it's all easy to get to as well, as the A303 is a mere 10 minutes away – making it potentially rather handy for a stopover.) Surrounded by a working farm with fields actively farmed throughout the year, the site is pretty peaceful. Guests can pick a plot where they please. With all the open spaces, there’s plenty of places for kids to let off some steam and families to play games, look out for wildlife, build firepits (there is wood available to buy on site) or unwind with a barbecue (bring your own with you). As the site is off-grid, bring a torch along to avoid any late-night stumbles as you make your way to the composting toilets. Handily, there are also facilities for ice pack freezing and mobile charging points in the farmhouse if you need them. If you're planning on doing a big shop for supplies, there are large supermarkets 20 minutes’ drive away in Wincanton or a smaller food shop good for the basics 10 minutes’ drive away. In Castle Cary (10 minutes’ drive), there are more food shops, butchers and pubs serving tasty grub. Or if you prefer your country pubs, there’s a cosy inn five minutes’ drive away too.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Loved our week stay here! So quiet and peaceful. It is basic but totally makes up for it in the views. We enjoyed that it was basic as most of the time we had the whole area to ourselves. Martin was great. Overall we really loved this campsite and would definitely recommend.

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: It was exactly what I was expecting - a field for camping with some picnic tables and some composting loos, which were nice and clean. It was all we needed. Loved being able to have a fire and buy wood there. Booking was super easy and the communication was clear and timely so I felt confident before arrival. The location is great. We booked it as a single night stopover on a longer journey and being 10 minutes from the A303 was perfect. Got chatting to some of the other campers and they had been to Longleat which is nearby.

Disliked: I knew this when I booked it but you have to take your rubbish with you, there's no bins. It was not a problem: I'd packed bin bags and we didn't have a lot of rubbish from one night. It just felt strange to pack that rubbish bag with us and take it to our next stop. Probably just me, and its no bad thing to be cognizant of the waste we produce while camping.
