  • Luxury site on the edge of the scenic Mendip Hills
  • Five minutes’ drive from Cheddar and 20 minutes from Wells
  • Private decks and hot tubs; views of Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels
Settle in for a sweet stay at Strawberryfield Park, a family-friendly site just outside the village of Draycott and five minutes’ drive from the famed Somerset village of Cheddar. The luxury site is well-placed for rambling explores hereabouts: on the edge of Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and within the Somerset Levels, walks and rides are plentiful nearby. The long-distance Mendip Way – a 50-mile trail that stretches from Weston-super-Mare to Frome – can be joined just 25 minutes’ walk from base, it’s less than 10 minutes’ drive to the spectacular Cheddar Gorge, and plenty of challenging (and stunningly pretty) cycling routes start in Draycott. If leisurely strolls around shops and riverside streets more appeal, turn tyres towards Cheddar. The name’s no coincidence: this is the home of cheddar, and no doubt the spiritual home of cheese fiends around the world. But it’s also well-known for its strawberry growing, so don’t be surprised to be presented with local eats at nearly every corner. Once everyone’s well and truly tired out, a return to site comes highly recommended. Make an immediate beeline for the private hot tubs that stand on private decks attached to private (and well-equipped) lodges, and soak the stress away while soaking up views of the Mendip Hills, the Somerset Levels and the star-ridden skies.

Local attractions

Given this area’s scenic pedigree, it’s entirely forgivable to think that the only things worth seeing are above ground, but that’s not so. A 15-minute drive will bring guests to Wookey Hole Caves on the outskirts of Cheddar to dive below the surface at the UK’s largest show caves system, before returning to terra firma for a dinosaur park, witch’s laboratory, fairy gardens and a 4D cinema. And that’s just to start… Craving sunlight after time in the depths? It’s just half an hour from the site to famed seaside resort town Weston-super-Mare and its plentiful beaches, peaceful gardens, interesting museums and distracting amusements pier. Less sandy time outdoors is to be had in Glastonbury, 25 minutes away, with climbs up Glastonbury Tor and wanders around the pretty town. Fancy burning a hole in wallets? The city of Wells is 20 minutes from base with plenty of shops to explore (as well as Europe’s oldest residential street); Bristol’s zoo, cathedral, museums and shopping are 45 minutes away; and the Jane Austen Centre, Roman baths, Assembly Rooms and galleries of Bath are within 50 minutes. If that’s still not enough spending, it’s just half an hour to Clarks Village outlet shopping. After all that time in cities, a nature-filled day might be a good option, so luckily it’s only a 50-minute drive to Longleat Safari Park…
