  • Smallholding with views over Glastonbury Tor and the Mendips
  • A 10-minute drive to Cheddar Gorge; 30 to Wells and Weston-super-Mare
  • Half a mile from the village pub and 1.5 miles from a golf course
This Somerset smallholding comes with three major perks. One: it's just south of the Mendips, meaning you can head out for hillside strolls whenever the mood takes you. Two: as befits a farm in this rural neck of the woods, there are all sorts of entertaining animals like pigs, sheep, a horse, chickens and ducks. Three? It's got to be that logburning stove… Home Farm's family-friendly accommodation is in the small village of Clewer, roughly five minutes' drive from Cheddar town. This part of the world is particularly well set up for fans of adventure sports – as well as the crags and caves of Cheddar Gorge (10 minutes), this place has easy access to a watersports centre (10 minutes) and paintball course (30 minutes). Lower-adrenaline (but equally enjoyable) attractions include the historic city of Wells and the beaches at Weston-super-Mare (both 30 minutes). Pretty neat, huh? This green and hilly part of Somerset also has some top views to its name (gazing out over Glastonbury Tor and the Mendips as the sun goes down being a particular highlight). If all that scenery has you in the mood for outdoor eats, feel free to fire up a barbecue and get those skewers sizzling (stroll 20 minutes down the road to Hectors Farm Shop for fresh meat and veg). For a post-dinner treat, make your way over to the open fire and local ales on tap at the village pub (10 minutes' walk).

Local attractions

After a couple of hours gaping at/taking photos of/climbing on Cheddar Gorge (10 minutes' drive) and exploring the caverns next door (also 10 minutes), more geological goodies lie in wait to Wookey Hole (20 minutes), an impressive cave complex with an underground river (parts are so spooky that the Doctor Who film crew used it as a backdrop for alien invasion). Twitchers and walkers, meanwhile, may prefer to stick above ground and mosey around Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (20 minutes). Bonus birdlife can be spotted at official RSPB sites like Ham Wall (20 minutes) and Greylake (30 minutes). All that sitting still may not suit younger tots, of course. If that's the case, sling a bucket and spade in the boot and head to Weston-super-Mare’s beaches (30 minutes), stroll the cobbled streets of Wells (30 minutes) or make for Bath (an hour) and play dress-up at the Jane Austen Museum. Older kids (in suitably old clothes…) can be treated to action-packed outdoor adventure at Bristol Paintball (30 minutes) or Cheddar Watersports (10 minutes).

Shepherds Hut cabin

Liked: Well equipped and cute accommodation for anyone wishing to get away from it all. Great little log burner keeps the hut cosy. Hosts were really friendly and welcoming.
