  • Scenic adults-only shepherd's hut overlooking the Somerset Levels
  • A five-minute drive from Wells and 10 from Glastonbury
  • Secluded lanes, spectacular views, and welcoming cream tea on arrival
When all you need is a break from the chaos of daily life, trundle along to Somerset and snuggle up nice and cosy at To Rest A While, an adults-only site on a working dairy farm five minutes’ drive from the city of Wells. This is a top spot for curing stress and overwork, with quiet and secluded lanes to wander along, soothing views over the fields of Somerset Levels towards the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and a real West Country cream tea waiting for you on arrival – not to mention a complete lack of kids scurrying around making noise… If spending days unwinding in the silence of the site isn’t enough for a proper holiday, maintain a sense of calm with explores and wanders nearby: join the Monarch’s Way walking route in Wells for lengthy rambles to Glastonbury (then saunter up to Glastonbury Tor on arrival), or take to the saddle for peaceful pedals along the West Country Way, which links Cornwall and the river Avon (and passes through Wells on the way). On chilly evenings, head back to your cosy shepherd's hut and cuddle up by the woodfired stove to warm aching bones and muscles after long days of adventuring, cook up a feast in the kitchen and then settle in for the night, with nothing at all to disturb your rest…

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We were met by the lovely Anne who showed us around and we were welcomed with a delicious cream tea and bottle of bubbly which we enjoyed in the private garden. The hut is in a great location on the farm, right opposite the 5 sheep and the cows who are very friendly (we even met the farm cat one evening who joined us for dinner). In the hut there is everything you could need, tea, coffee, milk, all the cooking equipment, fridge, cutlery and even a tv and dvd's, books and games in case of a rainy day. There is a great shower and a private bathroom in the hut too and the bed is super comfy! Even a fan for the warmer nights and an electric fireplace for the winter. Only a short walk into the City of Wells, we were very excited when we realised it was the filming location for the movie Hot Fuzz! Wells is a beautiful place with a stunning cathedral and great shops (I highly recommend the flapjack shop on the corner!) We also met a few locals who were very friendly, and we were lucky to have a great sunny weekend and managed to catch the market on the Saturday where we bought lots of fresh local produce for our dinners for the next few days (we realised the butter we bought was actually produced with the milk from the cows on the farm we were staying on! Highly recommend it was delicious!) We had to call Anne for some assistance on the second day and she was more than happy to help and arrived with us within minutes, even though she lives off site, and was more than happy to help us. In the evenings we sat and watched the sunset over the mendip hills from the Hut and drank local cider in the private garden, the farm is a working farm but we barely heard it at all, and when we did it was only when we were outside but even then it was such a peaceful getaway, the perfect place to get away from it all and unwind. I can't recommend this place highly enough, if we could give more than 5 stars we would. Thank you so much to Anne we cannot wait to come back and visit again!

Shepherd's hut

Liked: To Rest A While is such a fantastic Sheperd's Hut and Anne the host is fabulous! She met me on road a couple of miles out to guide the way; such an angel. Her cream tea, was lovely and I was also privileged to taste her amazing Victoria sponge cake! (Anne you should do a list for orders???) I was on my bicycle and perfectly situated for Wells, Glastonbury, Wookey Hole, Ebbor Gorge and Cheddar Gorge. Be aware there are some BIG hills!!! Cycling down through Cheddar Gorge road was unbelievable and worth the climb on the approach. With a car you could go even further a field and with ample parking on site; but do check where too, as it is a working farm. Saying that, it was totally peaceful and almost tranquil with occasional distant tractor sounds; as expected. The hut was perfect for me, my bike and I; as it would be for a couple. Lovely comfy bed (and I'm 6ft 2"), lots of hot water and great toilet/shower room. Cracking little cooker/grill/double hob, mini fridge with ice box, more than enough crockery, cutlery and utensils, towels, shower robes and lots more! Overall the hut surpassed my initial thoughts on booking. Superbly furnished and with everything I needed and more! I wouldn't hesitate to book; you won't be disappointed!!!

Disliked: Due to no fault of Anne, the recent hot and dry weather made it a little dusty at times. Saying that, it did not in anyway ruin my experience; just the gleam of my shiny bike!

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Cosy and comfortable excellent shower

Disliked: No wifi to speak of even though described as having it. . If lucky you could just pick up emails etc outside but totally hit and miss. I suggested that shouldn't advertise it until they'd sorted out the connection!

Shepherd's hut

Liked: All the places you can visit, Glastonbury, Stonehenge, Longleat, Wells Cathedral and Wookey Hole. Also while I was there the Bath and West Show. A different place to stay as a Shepherd Hut was something I had always wanted to stay. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Disliked: Noisy as building works were going on.

Local attractions

Start hols with a jaunt into the city of Wells, five minutes’ drive away: the spectacularly stunning Wells Cathedral, Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, and the highly photographable Vicar’s Close are all worthy of explores, and there are shops and markets to pass more retaily days. If credit cards are still begging to be swiped, there are more than 90 high street and designer shops at Clarks Village outlet centre 25 minutes away; otherwise stay in the car for a trip to Glastonbury where shopping can be complemented by a stop at the shoe museum, and non-shopaholics can opt for the Somerset Rural Life Museum or Glastonbury Abbey. Those with their noses in the past have plenty to investigate round here: the stately piles of Montacute House, Lytes Carey Manor and King John’s Hunting Lodge give a taste of grandeur within 40 minutes, the Fleet Air Arm Museum and Haynes International Motoring Museum are both around 35 minutes away for the mechanically minded, and the site is 50 minutes from Bath, where Austen-themed strolls, Roman baths and architectural masterpieces entice. For time in the great wide open, guests can flap along to RSPB Ham Wall to see some of the UK’s best starling murmurations, travel 40 minutes west to sandy beaches and the Brean Theme Park at Burnham-on-Sea, or travel 40 minutes east to Longleat Safari Park.
