  • Exclusive-use glamping tipi with spectacular views of rural Somerset
  • A 30-minute drive to Burnham-on-Sea beach, and 15 minutes to Wells
  • Off-grid facilities include a composting tree bog and horsebox kitchen
Hidden away in a private, three-acre field on the edge of the Somerset Levels, the Secret Tipi has spectacular views of the Mendip Hills. This is an exclusive-use, furnished tipi for two adults and two children – not quite glamping but nevertheless with quite a few luxuries thrown in. For starters, you have use of the horsebox kitchen, with a gas hob, sink and full cooking provisions – so all pots, pans, kettle, crockery and cutlery are provided. As this is an off-grid site, there’s only cold running water, but washing up can easily be done by boiling some water up. The dinky little glamping tipi – a veteran of several Glastonbury festivals by the way – has got a fully sprung mattress and quality bedding comes as part of the package. Campfires are allowed and a cooking tripod with grill is provided, along with seasoned logs and kindling – you can buy extra firewood on site for a small cost. The ‘treebog loo’ is a composting toilet with possibly the best views in Somerset, and there are recycling facilities as well as safe parking and wifi connections. Veg boxes are available to buy, and the neighbouring farms usually have milk, cheese, eggs and cheese for sale. If you’re keen to get out and about to explore the area, there are great walks and cycle routes along quiet country lanes straight from the gate. Or simply jump in the car and head for the beach at Burnham-on-Sea (30 minutes’ drive), or take the kids underground to see elaborate limestone stalactites at Wookey Hole caves (10 minutes).

Local attractions

Whether you fancy exploring on foot or on two wheels, there are hikes and cycling routes to suit in Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive), which also has some neolithic remains to spot, and the clifftop Cheddar Gorge Walk (20 minutes) leads to a watchtower for gorgeous views, or you can also try your hand at rock climbing in the gorge. The medieval city of Wells (15 minutes) is watched over by a magnificent Gothic cathedral, and you can also potter around ruins of a sprawling bishops’ palace as well as cute, medieval almshouses – believed to be the first social housing in Europe. Chances are the kids would love a day at the beach, and you have the choice of Burnham-on-Sea (30 minutes’ drive) with its immense sandy beach, or the seemingly endless sands and stately pier at Weston-super-Mare (45 minutes). Youngsters can also let off steam climbing up to Glastonbury Tor (20 minutes) for more of those glorious Somerset views.
