  • Family-friendly bell tents at Croydon Hall in Exmoor National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Blue Anchor beach and West Somerset Railway
  • Access to an outdoor pool, indoor hot tub, gym, bar and restaurant
In the midst of some spectacular Somerset scenery about 20 minutes’ drive from Minehead sits Starlit Glamping at Croydon Hall, a smart glamping site within the equally smart grounds of country house hotel Croydon Hall. Settle into one of the bell tents here and you’ll be in a most peaceful spot among the estate’s five acres of glorious English countryside. This location is within the eastern stretch of the Exmoor National Park, so there are plenty of options for hikes, bike riding trails and bridleways all around, as well as days of watersports, fishing and beaches up at the nearby coast. The glamping site is 200 metres away from the hotel, where guests are welcome to use the heated swimming pool, sauna, infra-red sauna, steam room and gym. The hotel’s restaurant and takeaway service are both available to glamping guests as well – most handy for easy meals at the end of a day of exploring. Each bell tent is equipped with a double bed and two camp beds, plus a gas hob, USB port and solar-powered lights. A utility cabin just outside has a shower, mains flushing toilet, fridge and storage cupboard. Outdoor seating and a firepit mean that alfresco evenings are nicely sorted, too.

Local attractions

Those who like an active holiday might like to visit the moors and hike or pedal along the Two Moors Way between Dartmoor National Park and Exmoor National Park. Pick your way across the ancient clapper bridge before setting joining the route from Tarr Steps (40 minutes’ drive). Minehead’s historic harbour (20 minutes) is a great spot for fishing and watersports, and the town has a lovely sandy beach too. There are other beach locations all around, but the closest to Starlit Glamping is Blue Anchor beach (15 minutes). Wimbleball Lake (25 minutes) is another watersports haven, but if you’d rather stick to dry land, just head to the West Somerset Railway (Williton) station (15 minutes), where steam trains will whisk you off on a scenic ride. The Coleridge Way, a 50-mile long-distance walking trail heading into the Quantock Hills, runs past the back of the station for those who want a real challenge. Something rather more relaxing? The site has a great relationship with the Golden Retriever Experience (10 minutes), a family-run attraction where you and your friends or family can have a personal encounter with a delightful pack of trained retrievers. If you fancy a sip of the local brew, visit Torre Cider Farm (10 minutes) to see where they grow, harvest, press and bottle their ciders before settling in for a taster glass of a range of ciders.

Luna bell tent

Liked: Amazing grounds, perfectly arranged to make you feel as if you had the place to yourself. Great staff on hand that made sure you had everything you needed. It’s a new site, so the team were keen to hear feedback on how they could improve their offering. Bell tents were kitted out with a comfortable double bed and kids’ zed-beds. Solar panels provided for charging phones and tablets. Fire pit set out with logs to burn and grills to cook on. If you didn’t want to cook, restaurant on site provides a great menu in massive portions. Add that to access to the hotel spa (outdoor heated pool, hot tub, sauna, gym) and it makes the perfect break.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.
