  • Glampsite with spectacular Somerset views 15 minutes’ drive from Bath
  • Dundas Aqueduct 20 minutes’ drive; Bradford-on-Avon 35 minutes
  • Restored shepherd’s huts with private hot tubs; pub five minutes’ walk
If you’re keen to explore the historic city of Bath, but want a luxurious and rural vibe to your break, take a gander at the shepherd’s huts of Ruby’s Retreat. In the tiny Somerset village of Tunley, the site may be only 15 minutes’ drive into Bath, but it’s another peaceful world well away from the bustle of city life. Each of the handful of comfy shepherds’ hut has been painstakingly restored and is well-appointed with comfortable beds, cosy living and dining areas, and all mod cons, including their own private bathroom facilities and small kitchenettes for prepping simple meals. Heat comes from a woodburning stove, with wood provided for your stay. Moving outside, you can soak in your private outdoor jacuzzi, spark up a barbecue and on clear nights watch the lights of Bath twinkle in the distance. Should you fancy a change of scenery (why would you, really?), there is a pub in the village (five minutes’ walk), and of course, the buzzing nightlife of the city is only 15 minutes’ away by car.

Finch shepherd's hut (pet friendly)

Liked: Quiet, secluded, gorgeous view. Beautifully presented. Some really lovely touches. Very clean. Hot tub is amazing. Woodfired bbq meant for some very tasty sausages.

Disliked: Leaving.

Jay shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: We spent 2 nights in Jay's hut. The stay was absolutely magnificent. The hut was spotlessly clean and equipped with everything necessary. A nice addition was a place for a bonfire and grill. Great views, a peaceful quiet place. It was nice to relax in the large private jacuzzi. The owner was very kind. Certainly not once we will return. 🙂

Jay shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: Absolutely loved our stay at Ruby’s Retreats. They have thought of every detail to make the shepherds huts cosy and well equipped, with most sensational views out over the Somerset hills. We loved the little touches like the bath robes & slippers, the complimentary fizz, the fire pits with ample wood to burn and of course the hot tub - with a view like that it was hard to wrench ourselves away from the tub each evening. There is a small bathroom with spotless toilet and shower, a fridge, kettle, hob, sink and basic cooking equipment as well as crockery and glasses. Even towels and bedding are provided - you really don’t need to bring anything along apart from yourselves and some nice food to bbq. We will definitely be back, thank you Andy for a wonderful stay.

Jay shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: We absolutely loved our stay at ruby’s retreat. The owner was friendly and accommodating as we didn’t arrive till late on the Friday. The Shepard’s hut was gorgeous. The views from outside were amazing and just to top it off we got our own private hot tub. Would definitely recommend and will no doubt be returning.

Local attractions

If you only have a few days to explore historic Bath (15 minutes’ drive), head for the Roman Baths and take a self-guided tour of the temple complex and columned Great Bath, plus the hot and cold plunge pools. Have a look around seventh-century Bath Abbey, taking in its ornate stained-glass windows, and admire the fine Georgian architecture of the landmark Royal Crescent. Culture attended to, take a dip in the rooftop pool at Thermae Bath Spa and get stunning views over the city as you do so. On the outskirts of Bath, have a wander around the Palladian bridges and follies in expansive parkland at National Trust - Prior Park Landscape Garden (15 minutes), see folksy US ephemera at the American Museum and Gardens (25 minutes), or witness a miracle of 18th-century engineering in the spans of Dundas Aqueduct (20 minutes). A little further afield, you can browse indie clothes and jewellery shops in pretty Bradford-on-Avon (35 minutes), or climb up to the Iron Age defence fort and 16th-century white horse carved into the hillside at Bratton Camp (40 minutes).
