General

  • Peaceful secluded park over a 30-acre wildlife haven
  • Free fishing on the site's own lakes and rivers
  • Woodlands walks, pitch and putt, library and boules all available

If there was an award for ‘most aptly named park’, Back-of-Beyond Touring Park in Dorset might just carry off the gong – and you'd likely give it an accolade or three for activities, location and quiet calm too.

Spread over 30 acres of Dorset woodland, river, heathland and lakes, Back-of-Beyond is reached via a quiet country lane and meanders over countryside naturally inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife: look out for deer, squirrels, moles, rabbits and the soaring sights of birds including the resident woodpecker.

The number of pitches is carefully managed among all this undisturbed space and, even better for a stampede of liberated parents, the park is adults-only.

Restful pastimes on site include free fishing on the park’s lakes and rivers (bring your own equipment and pick up a fishing licence when you arrive); boules; woodland walks and a five-acre nine-hole pitch and putt course among the squirrels, moles and rabbits (hire the necessary bits and pieces on site).

Guests can generally pick their own pitches and a particularly wildlife-filled option is available in ‘Emma’s Field’, a woodland glade. Although Back-of-Beyond is very dog-friendly, they aren’t allowed in Emma’s Field or around the fishing lakes (but pooches can let off steam in the ten-acre woodland area set aside especially for canines).

New owners Victoria and Martin took over Back-of-Beyond in February 2014 and are gently determined to keep the peaceful ethos of the site as well as keep guests tranquil re standards: the up-to-date facilities include three heated loo and shower blocks with power showers and hot water, a private/disabled shower room, hairdryers, indoor and outdoor washing-up areas and reception with morning bakery, lending library, newspapers, launderette and a shop selling bottled gas and essentials. All amenities are free to use and open 24 hours.

Essential supplies (food and beer) can be found at the two excellent pubs within walking distance; supermarkets, restaurants and two caravan and camping centres are within a few minutes by car.

So quiet, even the birds whispered!
Seriously though, you won't find a more peaceful site ... I had had a lot of stress recently and we went away to have a chill out relaxing time and I can honestly say I didn't even give a thought to the stresses of the previous weeks. I felt totally relaxed.
Showers were lovely and hot, the owners are so friendly and helpful, the fish in the pond outside the shop were ravenous and feeding them was an event in itself!
The pitch and putt was great fun. I have never played a game where you have to get the ball OVER the lip to get it into the hole, very challenging but such a great laugh too!
We loved everything - and yes I now believe all the myths that say there really is a Back of Beyond!

    Disliked:

If I was being really picky, the lights in the shower/toilet block go out after about 20 mins so if you're still making yourself beautiful, you have to wave your arms around in front of the sensor to put them back on again. But I fully get WHY they go off and I don't have an issue with it, we're all trying to save energy right. It's just a heads up as it may come as a shock if the lights go out on you and you weren't forewarned :-)

From the manager...

Thank you for the great review and comments on the park. We are so pleased there was so much for you to enjoy.
We do know we need to do some more work on the sensors in the shower blocks so hopefully by your next visit that will all have been sorted out.
Many thanks again.

Inadequate facilities for size of site.Three showers and two toilets for 120+ pitch site.Half Km round trip to toilets/waste/showers. Pricey for the facilities. Very busy roads and road noise at night. Rip-off prices in small shop.

From the manager...

Dear David.
Thank you for you Anonymous review.

Thank you for the review. We are very disappointed that you haven't enjoyed your stay with us.
We are very confused with some of your points however. With reference to the facilities. Three showers and two toilets?? We have 8 showers, 11 toilets. I am not sure how you got to your figure.
Half KM round trip to the shower block?? Are you sure you are talking about our park? The furthest pitch from the shower blocks is 120 metres. Your pitch that you chose is 90 metres away. The high majority are obviously nearer. We give all customers the opportunity to choose a pitch so those who want to be nearer the shower blocks have the ability to choose that.
The road is 1/2 mile away and although it can be heard in the distance on occasions if the wind is blowing in certain directions I don't think it could ever be described as loud.
Rip off prices in the small shop.
We are a small shop, I agree. We are a campsite shop and not a supermarket and we sell our goods as reasonable as we can afford bearing in mind our costs involved. We advertise supermarkets for those customers wanting a big shop we are there for convenience and forgotten essentials. You have the right to shop wherever you wish.
We wish you well in your future caravan holidays, and we hope you find a park to suit your needs obviously better then we have on this occasion.

Directions

We do have issues with our address when put into some satnav devices. Please print out these directions and follow these when you are close to the site to ensure you find us easily.

From the north or east
From the M3, take J14 onto the M27 westbound and join the A31 (signposted Ringwood). Pass Ringwood; stay on the A31 to St. Leonards and pass St. Leonards Hotel on left. At the next roundabout (signed Boundary Lane), turn right into the site lane. Take care: this turn is set back from the roundabout by a few yards, so look for our sign and one for Shamba.

From the west
Follow the signs for Ringwood on the A31 eastbound. Pass The Woodman pub on your left. At the next roundabout go straight over and immediately left into the site lane.

Drive straight down our lane, pass Shamba and go through the twin towers to our barrier. When you arrive at the barrier system press the button for attention.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

On the edge of the New Forest, Back-of-Beyond has Avon Heath and Moors Valley Country Parks, Ringwood and Avon Heath within soothing cycling distance (hire a bike on site if you’re not bringing your own); Bournemouth and Poole a little further on, and for city sightseers, Salisbury and Christchurch within easy reach. Maps of local bike routes are provided free in reception. If you’re sightseeing via car, the A31 is half a mile away for access to the New Forest and the Jurassic Coast.

Very varied sights and activities are handy within an easy five—15 minutes’ drive, whether your tastes range towards pottering around museums, historic houses and New Forest villages, birdwatching on Avon Heath, picking up bargains at boot sales/shopping centres, or sampling the best of cream teas and local produce in Dorset cafés and restaurants.

The biggest undercover market in the south of England, including a massive flea market and car boot sale every Saturday, is at Wimborne a few miles away (do try and make room for Wimborne Minster and Stapehill Abbey Crafts and Gardens too).

Shop, sightsee and club the night away in Bournemouth, or stick to its sandy stretches for sunbathing, surfing among the artificial reef and windsurfing; on land, canter about the countryside on horseback or zip around the 50 or so exhibits at the Bournemouth Aviation Museum. A bangingly good nearby attraction is the Ringwood Raceway, with banger, stock car racing and crackingly good crashes.

Christchurch, Poole, Salisbury, Winchester and the Jurassic coast are 20–30 minutes’ drive away coastwards and inland for a mammoth amount of things to see and do to suit all tastes: miles of award-winning beaches, sea fishing, fossil walks, cathedrals and National Trust houses and gardens.

Must see

  • Adventure Wonderland (3.8 miles)
  • The Bournemouth Balloon (7.5 miles)
  • Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum (7.7 miles)
