  • Family-run site by the River Tavy in Dartmoor National Park
  • River walks, fishing and kayaking within a 20-minute drive
  • Shop with fresh bread and local produce; diner van at weekends
Up with the lark? You want to try waking up with the otters. The River Tavy runs right past Harford Bridge Holiday Park and visitors to this Devon diamond often spot otters fishing the waters, along with kingfishers and dippers. This spacious and well-maintained site is on the western edge of Dartmoor National Park, a five-minute drive from the town of Tavistock. It’s almost a town itself, albeit a very quiet one, with a shop selling fresh baked bread and pastries, local produce, free-range eggs, milk and sweets. There are barbecue areas around the site for outdoor grilling and if that seems like too much hard work, wait for the weekend, when the Riverside Diner trailer sets up in the courtyard. If you did want to fit in some activity alongside all that feasting, there’s a tennis court to get competitive on, along with table tennis, table football and a sturdy kids’ playground for the smaller folk. There’s no slacking off for dogs either: canine friends are welcome on site and there’s a separate field for walkies. As it's a family-run site, the owners know what people need when holidaying with the brood, so the amenities include a pair of family wetrooms as well as heating in all the washrooms. There’s also a TV for those who can’t tear themselves from the screen.

Local attractions

Whether you’re an angler or an ambler, a paddler or just a waterside picnicker, the attractions of the River Tavy will be hard to resist. If it’s wanders you’re after, follow the water down into Tavistock and then take Drake’s Trail on foot or on wheels along a 21-mile trail combining country views with significant spots from the swashbuckling story of Sir Francis. Top it off with a trip to Buckland Abbey (20 minutes), where the sailor finally settled and where his descendants lived until 1938. For more active engagement with the water, land some trout (with luck) at Tavistock Trout Fishery, a couple of minutes’ drive from the site, or try kayaking from Canoe Tamar, 20 minutes away. Moorland wilderness on your agenda? Head for Haytor Rocks (45 minutes) to climb the rocky granite outcrops on Dartmoor’s eastern side; amid the vast open vistas, look out for buzzards overhead and the remains of 4,000 years’ worth of human settlement and industry. For wildlife on a smaller scale, few can fail to smile at the residents of Dartmoor's Miniature Pony Centre (45 minutes), while Paignton Zoo (an hour and 10 minutes) has the whole A to Z (almost) from Hamadryas baboons to Hartmann’s mountain zebras. Get wild and a bit wet yourselves after that at the town’s Splashdown Quaywest waterpark.
