  • Peaceful farm site 10 minutes' drive from North Molton
  • Family-friendly and surfer beaches within a 45-minute drive
  • On the edge of the Exmoor National Park for walks and activities
Birdsong in the morning, lambs bleating by day, starry skies of an evening… sometimes it’s a mighty fine idea to step away from the trappings of modern life and embrace life’s simpler pleasures. These are among the rural treats served up during a stay at Headgate Farm, on a sheep farm in a secluded spot 10 minutes’ drive from the little village of North Molton. It’s a bijou little site so you’ll be among the few humans here, but there’s plenty of company to be had among the sheep, horses, donkeys and chickens, plus several working dogs, a cat and a friendly Kunekune pig called Sam. Bring your boots along, for the farm is right on the edge of the Exmoor National Park, with trails galore and heaps of activities to seek out. You might also want to pack your beach kit (surfboard included if that’s your thing), as it’s only a 40-minute drive to the beaches of Devon’s north coast.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: If you’re after a rural peaceful location with lots of nature and surrounding beautiful views, then this is the site for you! We followed the arrival instructions and phoned the owner upon arriving onsite, she was super friendly and gave us lots of info on the site and surrounding areas. The facility’s were clean and had most things you could think of, the owners also provide use of fridge, kettle, toaster and milk if needed. We chose our pitch and set up which was plenty of room for us to stay comfortably, we was greeted by some very cute furry friends who loved to come and say hello and make sure we were settled in. We relaxed around the fire and waited for the sky to go dark to see the beautiful nights sky, and listened out for the deer and other animals. We had a peaceful nights sleep, and did a lovely walk in the morning recommended by the owner. We can’t wait to visit the farm again! And we will definitely be recommending to family and friends. Thank you to the owners x

Disliked: Nothing - honestly loved this site for a wild camp feel with the bonus of having facilities.

Liked: The site was well kept and clean

Disliked: Health and safety issue I injured my foot coming out of the toilet in the field. My foot went down a gap between the paving slabs, turning my ankle and causing bruising I reported the incident, but it wasn't documented. The owner thanked me for telling her and stated that these things happen and she would definitely check the slabs. I was offered no support with my injury and had to cut short my hiking trip

From the manager: Dear Sarah, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, all reviews are much appreciated. I was concerned for you and pleased that you had highlighted what had happened. With regard to support, you said what you planned to do and that was not to go walking but to spend the day at the coast with your feet in the sea water, of which I replied that maybe the cold sea water would probably be a very good remedy for your foot. Within half an hour you had left the site for the day and I was unable to see you in the evening as I was away from the farm from late afternoon and did not return home until after dark. My comment relating to 'that these things happen' was after I had said that something similar happened to me in my vegetable garden a couple of months ago. I certainly wasn't making light of your situation. I have documented the incident in our accident book and have also dealt with the area, so this wouldn’t be able to happen again. The above said I hope you managed to get to Dartmoor for a few days after leaving here and all is well. With kind regards Jude

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The rural site was super clean, well-looked after, all we needed and more. The animals were an added bonus. The stargazing was superb. The camp room in the next field had two free electric showers and there was a dishwasher, toaster, kettle, fridge and freezer with tea, coffee and milk - a lovely touch. Hosts were very organised and friendly. Lovely remote farm location.

Disliked: The site is a little uphill so some pitches are a little slopey but are big enough that we positioned the van so we weren’t on the wonk. Not a problem for us at all.

Liked: Very unspoilt rural spot with gorgeous views. Loved the donkeys.

Disliked: Uncovered washing up stand with no hot water

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, it is very much appreciated. I'm very pleased that you liked the location and the donkeys. There is no electricity on the actual camp site, so the possibility of having hot water connected to the open air sink is extremely slim. There is a camp site room with a washing up bowl and a kettle but the walk to it is a little further. With kind regards Jude

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Host was very friendly and helpful, site was very clean and tidy as were the facilities, location is rural but within easy distance of civilisation 😀. The whole of the Headgate Farm experience was much more than we expected, big thumbs up👍 Only wanted a place to sleep, as it was close to an event, but will definitely go again to enjoy the beautiful countryside and walking potential.

Disliked: Not a dislike in any way , but , take some levelling device as pitches are gentle sloping!!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: This was such a lovely campsite. Jude was so lovely and came and said hello when we arrived and made sure we had everything we needed. Lovely clean toilet on the camp field and another separate room with another couple toilets and a nice shower. This room also has a kettle, fridge, freezer, toaster and microwave which was super handy. Tea, coffee, sugar and milk provided. The field is in the middle with horses and donkeys and a pig around the outside. It was so lovely I can't recommend staying here highly enough. Amazing location perfect for exploring exmoor.

Local attractions

Exmoor’s the place for some excellent walks so head further into the national park for all sorts of trails – long hikes, circular strolls, coastal rambles and a pleasing number of routes that pass by a pub. Those who hanker after a raised adrenaline level can also join mountain biking, climbing and coasteering excursions, while folks who prefer to move at a slower pace can potter around with paddleboards, canoes or kayaks. There’s a super collection of beaches around here, too – head to Croyde to catch some waves (or learn the secrets of how to do so), take a bucket and spade to Minehead or head to Woolacombe to see what’s previously earned it a spot at the top of the UK’s best beaches list. For a family day out you may also want to consider The Big Sheep, the Milky Way Adventure Park, Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park or a ride on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway – all are within a 45-minute drive.
