  • Peaceful glamping a five-minute drive from South Molton, Devon
  • Exmoor National Park 15 minutes’ drive; North Devon Coast 50 minutes
  • Resident alpacas; communal fridge freezer; pub within a 20-minute walk
For a fashionable (by which feel free to read ‘comfortable glamping’) retreat in the Devon countryside, head to Camp Couture, a family-friendly site a five-minute drive from the town of South Molton. As you drive through the iron entrance gates, you’ll be met by the site owners, who will lead you to your accommodation: a fully furnished geodesic tent with views over the farm and the paddock, where you might observe resident alpacas and sheep. Guests are welcome to join in the feeding sessions – indeed, you might have a task on your hands trying to keep the kids aways from farm favourites Barny, Otto and Rupert (alpacas) and Maisie the goat. For an additional taste of life on a farm, there are also free-roaming friendly chickens and geese. Fancy taking it easy? Call dibs on the hammock outside the tent, from where you can gaze at the surrounding woodland and listen to soothing bird calls. If you’re into angling, there are three lakes at Hacche Moor Fishery (10 minutes’ drive), where you might spot kingfishers and red deer as you wait for carp to bite. Hiking areas in the vicinity include Range Woods (five minutes), on the banks of the River Mole, and Northcote & Upcott Woods (20 minutes), where you can stroll amid tall oak and conifer trees. And that’s without mentioning Exmoor National Park (15 minutes)… For something more relaxing, a leisurely stroll across the fields takes you to the local pub in about 20 minutes. The site comes with a toilet block and shower, plus an area where you can wash up after your evening barbecue; speaking of which, you can source provisions in South Molton (check out its award-winning indoor artisan pannier market) and store them in the communal fridge freezer.

Local attractions

Exmoor National Park includes a range of landscapes, from moor-covered hills to woodland, and from arable land to a dramatic coastline dotted with viewpoints like the Great Hangman, a cliff on the South West Coast Path. Whether you’re here to hike or mountain bike, keep your eyes peeled for the resident ponies. Exmoor Zoological and Conservation Centre (25 minutes) is home to black leopards (thought to be the mythical Exmoor Beasts roaming these hills), wallabies and capybaras. The centre also arranges carnivore feeding sessions and up-close-and-personal meets with selected animals. Spend a day on North Devon Coast (50 minutes), checking out beaches like Woolacombe and Saunton Sands (both popular for surfing) and Westward Ho!, fringed by a pebbly ridge with rockpools. Alternatively, climb up National Trust - Baggy Point for views across to Lundy Island.
