General

  • Family- and dog-friendly site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant
  • Two minutes’ drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • A 30-minute drive from the seaside town of Torquay

Want to feel like you’re getting a secluded and peaceful getaway without having to give up being close to other people? At Dartmoor Halfway Inn, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Newton Abbot in Devon, South West England, you get the best of both worlds.

Two minutes from the edge of Dartmoor National Park, The Halfway Inn is well placed for exploration – you can walk, cycle, ride, canoe or climb your way around the park, travel from scenic village to scenic village, or learn about the history of the area. The site and pub are dog friendly too, so ramblers should feel free to bring their canine companions along for the walk.

On site, kick back by the river Lemon, which passes just behind the campgrounds, or relax in the open green field – kids who aren’t quite ready to sit still for the evening can burn off any residual energy in the on-site playground.

When the whole family is ready for dinner, stroll over to the Halfway Inn for a slap-up meal, then knock back a few beers or a couple of glasses of wine – juice for the kids – and toddle back to where you’re spending the night less than 200 metres away.

If you’d prefer a change of scenery, there are plenty of other restaurants in Newton Abbot and within 10 minutes’ drive of Halfway Inn.

The pub joined to the site was excellent could not fault the pub experience from the food to the staff

    Disliked:

Access onto the pitches for larger units
Long term customers was on some of the best pitches and untidy and dirty looking units which let down the standard of the campsite

Could not fault the staff, they were cheerful and polite, nothing was too much trouble. The set out of the site and how you get a hedged pitch which was ample for a camper van, a caravan and a car. The toilet block was cleanish and warm. Reluctant to recommend this campsite as it is a little GEM.Thank you for a really lovely stay x

    Disliked:

The bathroom block only has one toilet and two showers, the campsite should consider in the future putting up an extra toilet block. The cobwebs should be removed daily as it’s not great sharing a loo with a couple of dead crane flies hanging from cobwebs..... also leaving a mop and bucket so that the floor in the showers could be wiped dry after use. Saw the cleaner on the morning of leaving and she didn’t have a bucket or cleaning fluid with the mop that she had which was left outside the block on the floor.???

Local attractions

At times, it might feel like you can barely turn a corner in this part of Devon without coming face to face with a stately manor – Bradley, Compton Castle, Greenway, Castle Drogo, Coleton Fishacre, Cockington Court, Torre Abbey and Dartington Hall are all with 45 minutes’ drive of Dartmoor Halfway Inn, and a visit to the spectacular 16-sided A la Ronde, 35 minutes away, is highly recommended.

Tipplers might like to make the trip to Buckfast Abbey outside Buckfastleigh, 10 minutes from the Halfway Inn, though you won’t be able to do tours or tastings at the factory. If the Abbey doesn’t get you steaming, head to the South Devon Railway and climb aboard the vintage train, or abandon alcohol-related puns altogether and head to the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary.

Fawlty Towers fans will be keen to learn that Torquay is less than 30 minutes from the Halfway Inn. Although you can no longer visit the real-life hotel behind the comedy, there’s plenty to keep you entertained: follow the Agatha Christie Mile to get a glimpse of some of the spots that inspired the murder mystery maven, dive below the Devon coast in the prehistoric Kents Cavern, or play giant at the Babbacombe Model Village.
