  • Peaceful shepherd's hut in a quiet spot a few minutes from the M5
  • A five-minute drive to Cullompton; half an hour to Exeter
  • Spacious hut with kingsize bed, kitchen and full shower room
It’s something of a supersized shepherd’s hut that you’ll find parked up at spacious and splendid Meadowview, in the Devon countryside five minutes’ drive from Cullompton (and a similarly short drive from the M5, for stress-free arrivals, departures and days out and about). Cosy but in no way cramped is the order of the day for stays here: the handbuilt hut (which goes by the name of Benny) contains a comfy kingsize bed, a little kitchen (with a kettle, microwave, toaster and small fridge plus a breakfast bar to eat at) and a full shower room (with toilet, large shower, basin, mirror and heated towel rail). Outside, there’s a seating area and a full-sized barbecue (pick up all the bits you’ll need for a fine feast at the supermarkets and shops in Cullompton). There’s lots of space to chill out around the hut: Benny lives in his own garden area, up on a small hill with lovely green views all around. And of course, this being a shepherd’s hut, you may be joined by a flock of sheep grazing in the next-door field from time to time. Tear yourselves away from this little haven and your days out might include visits to Exeter, seaside days in Exmouth or walks in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – all are half an hour or so away. Meadowview is also a good base for touring Devon by bike: there are great cycle paths and a nearby bike hire place should you want to follow along the nearby Tiverton Canal and along the banks of the River Exe south of Exeter.

Local attractions

Indulge in a little history when you visit this shepherd’s hut in rural Devon. A working wool museum with steam days is only 10 minutes’ drive away: Coldharbour Mill is the name. Then, there’s Tiverton Castle (15 minutes), where visitors can try on armour or wander around the walled gardens or Powderham Castle (half an hour), home to an ancient deer park. National Trust sites may also form part of your itinerary in these parts. Killerton House (20 minutes), an 18th-century house, and Knightshayes Court (20 minutes), a Victorian country house, both open their doors to visitors to take a trip back in time. With Yarak Birds of Prey (15 minutes) for bird flying shows and Chevithorne Barton (20 minutes) for an oak collection and garden, nature or wildlife fans will find plenty to entertain themselves with. Interested in pebble beach dips, a loop walk or somewhere to take off onto the South West Coast Path from? Budleigh Salterton (40 minutes) will fit the bill nicely for those sorts of activities. Kids are likely to like the The Bear Trail (15 minutes), Diggerland Devon (five minutes), Crealy Theme Park & Resort (half an hour) and the Devon Railway Centre (20 minutes).
