  • Luxury shepherd’s huts on a remote part of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall
  • Adrenalin Quarry 25 minutes’ drive; East Looe beach 35 minutes
  • Heated bedroom and kitchen huts with moorland walks direct from site
For a true get-away-from-everything experience in Cornwall, go off-grid in a pair of handcrafted shepherd’s huts with a private and peaceful setting on Bodmin Moor. Tucked into a valley, Diddylake Shepherd Huts are 15 minutes’ drive from pretty St Neot and 25 minutes from Liskeard. Remote they certainly are, but that doesn’t mean Diddylake Shepherd Huts lack creature comforts. Made from recycled timber, they are cosy and homely, heated by woodburner (a few logs are supplied; others can be bought). One hut has a comfortable bed with warming blankets and pretty decor; the other has a fully equipped kitchen and dining area, with a barbecue and firepit just outside for alfresco meals on warmer days. A spring-fed shower and compost loo sit in their own wooden huts a few steps away by the ruins of Diddylake House. It’s not often you get to sleep in a Site of Special Scientific Interest, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Dark Sky Reserve, but Diddylake is in all three. There might be the odd chilly night-time dash to the loo (bring a torch…), but a stay here more than compensates with the chance to spot wildlife and the Milky Way. Buzzards, ducks, swallows, skylarks and cuckoos all abound at different times of year, along with the odd red kite. Deer and fox are frequent visitors too, as are butterflies, dragonflies, newts and frogs, so keep a camera to hand. And on clear nights, you’ll be amazed by the spectacular starry skies.

Local attractions

The whole of Bodmin Moor is yours to ramble straight from the huts. Time-travel back to Neolithic times with a hike to Hurlers Stone Circles, have a scramble up to The Cheesewring (both half an hour’s drive), a twin tor composed of naturally eroded granite slabs, or walk the peaceful shores of Colliford Lake (20 minutes). Fun-filled outdoor action can be had hurtling over the lake at Adrenalin Quarry (25 minutes) on zipwires, and you might like to go trekking across the moor with an alpaca in tow (25 minutes’ drive) Learn about local mining heritage with a tour of Cornwall’s only underground slate mine at Carnglaze Caverns (20 minutes, a good idea for keeping occupied on any wet days), or by following sections of the Caradon Trail (25 minutes) on foot or by bike past former mines and engine houses. Choose between the two Cornish coastlines for beach adventures: surfers hang out on Fistral beach at Newquay (an hour) to the north, while in the south, East Looe beach (35 minutes) is known for safe swimming and the crabbing potential off Banjo Pier.
