  • Peaceful rural campsite close to the A30 in the west of Cornwall
  • Porthtowan Beach 10 minutes' drive; Truro 15 minutes
  • Wood-fired hot tub available to hire; on-site laundry facilities
A short drive from the A30 road, family-run and family-friendly Primrose Farm Holidays sits in the small village of Penstraze, in the west of Cornwall. Surrounded by glorious countryside, the modern site is also within about 10 minutes of the coastline and beaches like Porthtowan, making for a ‘best of both worlds’-type scenario. It will take you no time at all to settle into the pleasant surrounds of this relaxed place, and you are welcome to bring along your well-behaved dog for the ultimate family holiday. Barbecues and firepits are allowed, or you can spend an evening of luxury soaking in the wood-fired hot tub (book in advance; extra charges apply). Generous grassy pitches have easy access to the on-site amenities, which include toilet and shower blocks, a water supply and laundry facilities (available at an extra charge). If you’re planning on doing your own cooking, there is a small fridge (with a freezer compartment for chilling ice packs), plus a veg prep and washing-up area. There is a cafe/tearoom within a 15-minute walk. The nearest pubs and shops are in Chacewater (five minutes' drive) or Threemilestone (also five minutes), while the larger town of Truro can be reached in just under a quarter of an hour.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Location was good for local beaches

Disliked: Only have grass pitches , and they were waterlogged so we had to park on the entrance to the field on some gravel , facilities were ok , rough and ready, showers were good but toilet block was poorly built , even though it was built this year , built out of pine cladding, doors needed to be lifted to lock them due to warping, they need gravel pitches asap , I won’t use them again because if it rains next summer you wouldn’t get out of the field because it holds water

From the manager: Hi Tim Thank you for your review. It is very clear in our ad that We only offer grass pitches, We have had an unusually wet winter so far our field never hold water and long even this time of year, they drain very quickly. However it has rained every day since early November so we try to protect the feilds and any guest vehicles by offering the entrance. We did have a very wet summer and none of our pitches were water logged nor did we have any guest stuck. The water table in December is much higher. during your stay we were in the midst of 2 storms back to back. At this time of year we try to stay open to for one or two guests at a time knowing that If the feilds are to wet we can offer a dry space for motor homes to park up safely and still have all the services to hand. I do take insult for your comment, Rough and ready facilities, we try and go above and beyond to keep these clean and even though you were the only guests staying these were cleaned twice a day. The whole building is timber and movent in the structure is expected in the winter months, I can only apologise if the door lock did not line up first attempt. I would welcome you back anytime to show you how great our little site is and would go as far as to offer you a free stay to prove it. This time of year can be harsh weather wise so feel your review may be tainted by this fact as well as the storms. Stephen and Amanda Primrose farm holidays

Clover bell tent

Liked: Loved the bell tent and really appreciated all the equipment it came with from a BBQ, cooking equipment, crockery and cutlery etc. The shower facilities are also great and very well kept. Would definitely recommend.

Disliked: Only slight annoyance we had was the noise from the main road but we're aware there isn't much you can do about it.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: No

Disliked: It was our 2nd visit to primrose farm the first year was ok that was the reason we booked again this time for 2 weeks. We sent the owner an email asking if we can be in the bay near the animals it. Was more quiet because you cant hear the traffic on the roads. We sent another email saying we have a tent and a dome shelter. When we turned up on the farm she showed us the last pitch next to the gate by the animals. When i saw the pitch i asked the owner how can i set up the tent and my dome shelteri couldnt put my dome shelter in front of my tent because we would have blocked the people next to us they had to move there vehicle because their was no spacethe owner said this was the only space she could give me she suggested to put the dome up first on an uneven surface. Next we put up the tent next to the walk way to the gate where the animals are she said you wanted to be next to the animal so i put you next to the animals. Our tent was on dips our beds where not even we where dipping to one side when i was cooking the water in the saucepan was spilling out on one side. Because the cooker was not level. It was a bad experience because the children with parents we understand that but there was children running back and fore shouting and screaming making so much noise until ten oclock in the evening. We didnt have any privacy especially mealtimes we where being watched when people where walking past the tents we couldnt take out our chairs from the tent because we would be sat on the walk way. The dome was under the tree that is damaged scagged and full of stains. For the two weeks we nearly paid 600 pounds. We could have chose a better place and more respect. We will not be back or we wont recommend the place to friends.

From the manager: Hi Monika, We take all reviews seriously and as a small business we pride ourselves one responding to any problems that may arise quickly. In your email you specifically asked for this pitch as it was the closest one to the animals. As you had visited before we assumed you were fully aware of it's position. We sincerely apologize that it did not meet your expectations however if you had made us awear during your stay of the issues we could have arranged a spot very close to the tent to pitch the gazebo or simply cut back a few branches. Or as another pitch became available offered you that. This said we have taken your comments on board and have completely releveled off this area thus making every pitch on site as level as they can be. We have created a path way leading to the animals thus creating more privacy and have cut back the hedge as far back as it can go. As you know we are very family orientated here on the farm and we do ask for guests to quitely enjoy the long summer nights from 10pm. We encourage children to play but I can not comment on the noise levels as we were not made aware at the time. We do hope you will visit us again and allow us to make it up to you as well as show you the improvements we have made on the back of your review. Kindest regards Stephen and Amanda Primrose farm holidays

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Lovely site, we were so tempted to extend our stay. Lovely clean facilities, we were told the block closest to us was the old style block and the new block had much larger showers, but we managed well with the older block. The showers were temperature controlled, not timed and came off the wall to be hand held so showering little ones was much easier. Dog exercise field was amazing. Felt like a lovely community feel on the site too. Lots of families, dogs and children playing. Was lovely. I’d be very tempted to try the glamping units next time. They looked amazing!

Disliked: Nothing really. Pitches were a little on the small side, but we managed with our motorhome and large awning :)

Liked: Took a large caravan, easy access and large pitch. Good clean facilities, hot powerful showers. Even provide a paddock for dogs. Stephen & Amanda super helpful and friendly. Perfect location for everything, beaches within 10 minutes drive and shops 5-10 minutes depending on what you want. Hopefully be back next year. Thank you for a super stay.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Good size pitch, friendly welcome, good level of facilities and a nice central location for getting out and about. Showers were fantastic.

Disliked: Could do with some ventilation in the shower block, always steamed up but a minor inconvenience. The loos could benefit from a more regular clean and tidy and stock up on loo roll and hand towels but again not a major issue.
