  • Spacious bell tents at a family-run glampsite in Mount Hawke
  • A 10-minute drive from Chapel Porth beach and Trevaunance Cove
  • Well-equipped kitchen hut and picnic table for each tent
Comfy stays in the Cornwall countryside – and close to the coastline too? Bank on that sort break at the spacious, family-run Penhallow Campsite. On the edge of the village of Mount Hawke and 15 minutes’ drive from Truro, this glampsite has a rather delicious selection of scenic walks or bike rides locally… Or you could take the 10-minute drive up to the north Cornwall coast for strolls on the South West Coast Path and beach days at Porthtowan or Chapel Porth. Having the village centre 10 minutes’ walk away is pretty convenient too – it’s easy to wander on down to the café, convenience store or bus stop easily enough (and there’s an excellent skate park there too). Back at base, you’ll be staying in spacious and well-furnished bell tents with space for two adults and two children (in a full-size double bed and two futon mattresses). You’ll need to bring along bedding and towels, but much else is provided – including rugs to keep things cosy underfoot. Alfresco dinners (with gorgeous rural views) are all part of the attraction here, and they should be easy enough to sort out as each tent has its own little kitchen hut next door. It’s packed full of handy kit including a fridge, a kettle, a two-ring gas hob and all sorts of pots, pans and plates; once you’ve created your meal, take it out and serve up on the picnic table just outside. Shared toilet and shower facilities are close to the tents, and there’s also a play area where kids can have a bit of a run about.

Liked: Had a fantastic couple of days should have been longer but due to unexpected circumstances it had to be cut short. Hope to return next year and do all the things we didn't get to do this time.

Bell tent (no pets)

Liked: The campsite really provided a great out of the way location that felt like we were away from the hustle and bustle of life. It was clean, spacious and not crowded, which meant our kids could run around and have fun, and play games like cricket. I also liked the fact that animals were allowed. This specifically reduced one of the stressed families with pets usually face. The staff were friendly and made an effort to ensure that the facilities were clean and tidy. Our tent looked great, and was spacious inside, with some extras added, like candles and lights. It just felt like a place where one could go and relax, and it served as a good base for touring, and shops were nottoo far away. We made use of the fire pits provided, for cooking and toasting marshmallows!

Disliked: Each tent had its own kitchen with facilities. Whilst this was great, the kitchens themselves are quite limited in space. As is always the case in the UK, weather can play a part in an experience. It was great that the tents were waterproof, but it was difficult to get things like towels and rain jackets to dry, and there was no facilities for this. the tents could not accommodate this. I would recommend visitors bring their own drying rack to dry clothes.

Bell tent

Liked: We booked Penhallow very last minute and we're so glad we did. We travelled down as a family of four, with our six year old and six month old baby. From the moment we booked, until the moment we left, the level of service we received was amazing. Claire was incredibly attentive and the communication was brilliant. Claire ensured she was waiting at the campsite for our arrival, so she could provide us with a familiarisation on our tent / kitchenette, she answered all our questions and provided plenty of information. The facilities are always kept very clean, people on the camp site are very respectful and ensure the communal facilities are left exactly how they were found. The tents are ideal if you're looking to break yourself in gently to camping or just like the convenience of having everything ready for you. The kitchenette is also well equipped to knock up some culinary delights. All in all, a five star plus review, this is our second time glamping and we will certainly be returning to Penhallow for a third. Thank you for making our stay perfect.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing.

Bell tent (no pets)

Liked: Everything! The site was lovely, perfect for our children who made lots of new friends! The fully equipped kitchen was amazing, almost didn't feel as though we were camping, having electrical sockets in the bell tents was also a nice suprise! Claire was more than accommodating whilst there, always beautifully clean facilities and never empty of anything you'd need! Our children loved this site, the beds were very comfortable and having a firepit provided was a bonus! There is nothing we didn't like and I cant wait to ask my family back with us next year to experience it!

Disliked: As mentioned by others, the shower water going her and cold, not drastically mind! And only noticed it was when another person in the block used other water facilities. Didn't ruin anything for us though!

Local attractions

Join the surf brigade at Porthtowan beach (10 minutes’ drive)… the coast takes a lot of the limelight in Cornwall, and it’s easy to see why. Perhaps you’ll want to take part in the tradition of bellyboarding on wooden boards at the National Trust’s Chapel Porth beach (10 minutes) or take on the super surf break on Portreath beach (15 minutes). For more surfs or walks and horse rides along the sand, Perranporth beach (15 minutes) might be up your alley. Other top coastal spots for a wander include the St Agnes Heritage Coast (10 minutes) for remains of tin and copper mines, the St Agnes Beacon (10 minutes) and the handsome harbour by Trevaunance Cove (10 minutes). Now that you’ve taken in some of the mining heritage, discovering the art of Cornish cider could be up next - Healey's Cornish Cyder Farm (10 minutes) runs tours and samplings. For more historical type places, there are steam train rides on the Lappa Valley railway (25 minutes) or Truro city centre (15 minutes) for a Victorian cathedral and the Royal Cornwall Museum.
