After a slice of rural West Country life? That’s exactly what you get at Elm Farm, a Cornwall smallholding where the camping fields have uninterrupted views across Laity Moor to the hilly local landmarks of Carn Brea and Carn Marth. Tucked away in the peaceful Nancekuke Valley and just 10 minutes’ drive from Redruth's shops and pubs, the tree-sheltered grass pitches are positioned around the perimeter of two spacious meadows, leaving lots of open space in the middle for kids to play safely. Catering concerns are all taken care of: you can rent a firepit and buy wood from reception to get grilling up a barbecue, and there’s also a café on site to save you the bother of cooking. Need advice on country or coastal walks? Ask the site owners – their local knowledge is second to none. If you’d like to explore the quiet Cornish lanes under pedal power, you can hire bikes from them too. Whether you’re on site or out and about, keep a beady eye open for wildlife: buzzards and barn owls are common sights, but you may strike lucky and spot foxes, badgers and stoats as well. The camping fields are supplied with clean drinking water and solar lights around the amenities block, which has a constant supply of hot water. There’s another loo beside the café, just a short skip up the hill.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice and quiet place despite the proximity of the road. Very easy access, almost flat ground! The toilets and showers are large and very clean. We did not see our hostess because we arrived at anytime (be reasonable so as not to disturb the other campers) but she sent us all the instructions by email (thank you).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great wild camping style campsite with clean and well maintained composting loos and great hot showers. Choose your own pitches, but the site was split up into smaller fields than some places which made it feel super cosy rather than one massive field. Area well maintained. Very eco based with solar panels providing lights in the composting toilets and showers. I couldn’t work out if the solar panels were heating the water too. There was even a cute little sign explaining why there were so many wasps and not to harm them as they're so important to the ecosystem.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: On arrival at site, we texted Ally to let her know wr had arrived. Once we had decided where to pitch, she came and welcomed us. Facilities were kept clean. Other campers onside were very friendly. The site is clean and managed. The cafe was good and the lady who runs it was very friendly. Which was also the case for Simon, who runs the bike hire. A very enjoyable stay.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet location, friendly and helpful staff, great composting toilets, good washing up facilities. Great showers (tip:the floor is cold so I recommend wearing something on your feet). Toilets and showers clean. Free Wifi. Basic grass pitches with no electric hook up which suited us fine. They have an 11am to 7am quiet time rule which I feel is good but bear this in mind if you prefer to set off in your vehicle before 7am in the morning.

Local attractions

Surfers, you’ve struck lucky, as Elm Farm is close to the sandy surfing beaches of Portreath (10 minutes’ drive) and Porthtowan (five minutes). Long-distance walkers, this campsite makes a handy overnighter when you’re hiking the South West Coast Path (10 minutes); if you’re up for shorter potters, it takes around half an hour to stroll to cliffs along the rugged North Cornwall coastline. Culture vultures might want to head for St Ives (25 minutes) to absorb the arty delights of the Tate St Ives or the stellar collection at the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. If that’s a step too far for the attention spans of your kids, take them to pan for gold and explore a former tin-smelting mill at Cornwall Gold and Tolgus Mill (five minutes). Up the family activity levels with a few speedy laps on quad bikes at The ATV Centre (10 minutes, booking required), or spend some crafty grown-up time sampling award-winning scrumpy at Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm (15 minutes). For the music fans among you, there are occasional festivals at Mount Pleasant Ecological Park (five minutes).
