  • Family-friendly wild camping on Bodmin Moor, with stunning lake views
  • Anglers’ haven: private access to lake for brown trout fishing
  • Top spot for stargazing, in a designated Dark Sky Reserve
Colliford Lake Park Campsite is a tent only non-electric site, with family-friendly wild camping on Cornwall’s Bodmin Moor (15 minutes’ drive from the village of St Neot and the town of Bodmin), where everything feels a bit more slowed down. Colliford's a prime base for getaways and roaming around: the 20-acre secluded moorland site has private access to Colliford Lake, where aspiring anglers can cast a line to try and land a brown trout (fret not about having your chances dashed by someone zooming by on a jetski, as watersports are banned on the lake). Away from the water, ramblers, bikers and horseback riders can follow the waymarked trails through the moor, keeping eyes peeled for otters, bats, stonechat and wheatear songbirds and the rare marsh fritillary butterfly. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head back to the site and fire up the barbecue. If you're not grilling the day's catch, supermarkets are within 15 minutes of Colliford, or you can take a break from cooking and try one of the restaurants nearby.

Local attractions

If Cornish history is your jam (which should always go beneath the cream on your scones, of course), you might want to start your hols at Colliford Lake Park Campsite with a trip to the famous Jamaica Inn, immortalised in Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name. It’s less than 10 minutes’ drive from site, and has a smuggler’s museum to boot. Stay in the history zone with a spin to Bodmin, where you can join in a trial at the Courtroom Experience and find out what happens on the other side of the judge’s gavel at Bodmin Jail, or go further back with a stop at the Hurlers Stone Circles (believed to be a group of men who were turned to stone for playing the traditional Cornish game of hurling on the Sabbath). If the weather isn’t working in your favour, head to Carnglaze Caverns for an underground tour of the old slate mine and a journey to its subterranean lake. Once the skies clear, bring the kids along to Hidden Valley Discovery Park, take them zipling and to the waterpark at Adrenalin Quarry, and intro them to the animals (and rides) at Camel Creek Adventure Park, all within around half an hour of Colliford.
