  • Camping pods on a friendly family farm in north Cornwall
  • A five-minute walk from Camelford and five miles from the coast
  • Feed the animals, light up a campfire and splash in a private stream
Beaches, Bodmin Moor, scenic surrounds and blissfully easy access to shops and other amenities… all are on the menu for guests at Higher Culloden Farm. The nifty rural location of this cracking Cornwall site means plenty of gorgeous green views and space for barbecues, coupled with the ability to get to Camelford’s pubs, shops and takeaways with a five-minute stroll when you’ve a hankering for a pint or a bag of chips. As an added bonus, the A39 is at the end of the lane, making ins and outs as straightforward as possible. Fancy a crack at being a farmhand? The folk here will happily take guests out on their morning rounds, where gleeful tiddlers (and often equally gleeful grownups) can help to feed the animals. Farm work finished, it’s time for kids to splash in the stream, to play in the mega sand pit or to cuddle up with the rest of the family for an evening of stargazing by the barbecue or campfire (allowed in designated areas). No need to fear damp days – retreat to the barn, where you can compete at table tennis and enjoy some tasty takeaways under cover. These cosy camping pods are double glazed, insulated and handily have plenty of storage. With a kingsize bed space and two young kids’ bench beds, just remember your sleeping bags. Each has access to a private shower room and a shared kitchenette with a kettle, toaster and microwave. There's no electricity in the pods, but rechargeable lights are at hand. Gadget charging lockers mean no need to lose contact with the wider world: unless you want to...

Local attractions

The Cornwall coast is calling… the closest beach is Trebarwith Strand (10 minutes’ drive), a top spot for those toting surfboards. Polzeath, Daymer Bay, Widemouth Bay and Summerleaze beach are all within a half-hour drive too, with a spot for everyone – surfers, swimmers and sandcastle builders. Padstow’s a 35-minute drive away for fancy dinners and posh fish and chips. Setting your sights inland towards Bodmin Moor is a splendid idea too, especially if you’re up for a hike. Intrepid types can walk to Roughtor (Cornwall’s second-highest peak) directly from the farm in a couple of hours – or park nearby and make it even shorter, and then conquer Brown Willy in another hour for stunning views from Cornwall’s highest point. Prefer to travel on two wheels? Pick up the Camel Trail at Wenfordbridge four miles away and pedal all the way to Padstow in an hour, stopping in Wadebridge for picnic bits along the way. Family days out nearby might include a trip to Tintagel Castle (20 minutes’ drive) for knight-inspired antics with a sea view. Otherwise, see if the kids can help you escape the maze and puzzle house at Hidden Valley (20 minutes) or wander through rainforest at the Eden Project (40 minutes).
