  • Peaceful, dog-friendly off-grid site on Kit Hill
  • A 15-minute drive from Tamar Valley; beach 35 minutes’ drive
  • Train station and supermarket 10 minutes' drive; walk or cycle nearby
Splendid scenery, peace and quiet and river valleys, beaches and moorlands… Red Berry Field has all the quietness of a completely off-grid place in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty around 10 miles from Dartmoor National Park, but at the same time, action isn’t far away. That includes Tamar Valley (15 minutes’ drive) and the north or south Cornwall coast, both under 45 minutes’ drive away. With a friendly host, you’re sure to feel snug as a bug here. There are eco facilities including composting toilets, good news for the green-fingered among you, and firepit facilities to round off any action-packed day nicely. While the site is nicely tucked away, you should find good 4G signal and there’s easy access from the roads (and a car park to leave your car). Still, this is a good place to switch off properly for a while. There are wildlife ponds, the beginnings of the site’s small ‘forest garden’ and a lovely view of the Tamar Valley. Conveniently, pets are permitted here and the site will pick you up from the train station if you need (it’s 10 minutes’ drive away). There’s a supermarket only 10 minutes’ drive away, so it’s simple to get some snacks under your belt. After that, you should be well-set for walking and cycling, with the Tamar Trails Centre just 10 minutes’ drive away and kayaking on the Tamar river in Tamar Valley.

Local attractions

Where to go walking? Well, there’s Kit Hill, which has a Neolithic long barrow and 19th-century mines along the way, or Bodmin Moor (half an hour), with its granite tors and smuggler’s inn. Dartmoor National Park itself isn’t short on trails, of course, and neither is Tamar Valley, once you decide upon your best course of action - kayaking, walking or cycling. For those of you who prefer to cycle your way around, The Camel Trail (35 minutes) is a likely option. It runs 18 miles from Bodmin (35 minutes) to the pretty Padstow. That’s one of the places up north to crack open – perhaps the beach at Crackington Haven (45 minutes) or the grand Tintagel Castle (55 minutes) will make the cut too. Cornwall’s southern beaches are a little closer by… Looe (35 minutes), Tregantle beach (35 minutes) or Plymouth (45 minutes) have their own original streak. If you do visit Plymouth, the National Marine Aquarium (45 minutes) will get you more acquainted with life under the sea. While, over at the Eden Project (45 minutes), you should feel in quite a different sphere with the rainforest biomes and diverse plant life.
