  • Small family-run pop-up site on a working farm with lots of wildlife
  • A 15-minute drive to Tamar Trails; 25 minutes to Adrenalin Quarry
  • Walks and a paintball site on the farm; pubs and supermarkets close by
Itching for a break with plenty of canoeing, hiking and mountain biking options to fill your days? Perhaps paintballing sessions or swinging about the treetops on a high ropes course? With Tamar Trails Centre 15 minutes’ drive away (for hiking, biking, canoeing and archery) and Adrenalin Quarry 25 minutes away (for zipwires, go-karting and an aqua park), Kelliwik Valley Camping makes a good base while you get out and about in Cornwall. The enterprises don’t end there, though, as this pop-up site is on a farm where there’s a paintballing centre (dependent on availability, as you’ll need to book this directly with On Target Games). And when you’re done for the day, you’ll have access to an indoor shower and a flushing toilet to dust yourself off, or there are farm tracks with views of Bodmin Moor and Kit Hill to keep you moving. The site may be small, but there’s a mighty load of wildlife here, including a pond. Despite the rural surroundings, the site is well within reach of all sorts of attractions in west Devon and Cornwall. It's around 12 miles from Plymouth and just five minutes’ drive from Callington town centre where pubs, takeaways and supermarkets are on hand for any nibbles, drinks or extra kit you may need.

Local attractions

So, you’ve already conquered the 25 kilometres of mountain biking trails at Tamar Trails Centre (15 minutes’ drive) or taken a pretty paddle from the quay, but what about a trip back in time? Buckland Abbey (half an hour) is one place for such things. The 700-year-old house is open to the public, as is the National Trust’s Cotehele (15 minutes), a grand estate and house from the Tudor times. Hurlers Stone Circles (25 minutes) go further back, as these ceremonial circles are possibly Neolithic or from the Bronze Age. While you’re over this way, those of you who count waterfalls as a worthy detour will find a little series of cascades at Golitha Falls (25 minutes) for a proper waterside walk. But what about the city and the coast? Well, with Plymouth (half an hour) within striking distance, you’ll have the choice of the aquarium, a drink or two in the Royal William Yard and across the water, Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park (45 minutes) for a historic outing over the sea, including Segway rides around the estate or paddleboarding at one of its remote coves.
