  • Nymans and Leonardslee Gardens within 10 minutes' drive
  • Swimming pond on site, plus firepit for each tent
Hassle-free outdoor stays in a peaceful location with easy access to pubs, cream teas, wild swims, woodland walks… you’ll need to head to the Himalayas for that. Not the actual Himalaya mountains, but secluded glamping site The Holmsted Himalayas in the West Sussex countryside. This quiet spot in the Ouse Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is up on a ridge so it’s got gorgeous views over the surrounding area, and is often treated to fine sunsets too (and some great stargazing after dark). The immediate surroundings are all woodland, open space and lakes to roam around, and the site has its own swimming pond where you can take a freshwater dip. Secluded this place may be, but it’s not cut off at all – there are a couple of pubs a mile or so away (with more pubs, cafés and restaurants in nearby villages like Warninglid and Cuckfield) and large supermarkets are in Haywards Heath, 10 minutes’ drive away. Plenty of days out are easy to get to as well: botanic gardens, National Trust properties, watersports, wine tasting… take your pick… And what of the accommodation? You’ll be staying in comfortable bell tents kitted out with camp beds, with soft bedding, rugs, lighting and an outdoor firepit (with home-produced firewood available from the farm). A short walk away is the communal stretch tent, which has shared facilities like fridges and kettles plus mains power for charging your devices.

Bell tent

Liked: Wonderful wonderful bell tent site. What a game changer to have a refrigerator and Kettle, as well as power to charge those teens' lifelines. Lots of varied options of communal seating which positively encourages friendly interaction among campers. The bell tents have futon mattresses which for me was a plus, as I prefer the truer camping experience but cannot manage the load that becomes of bringing tents and bedding as I don't drive. The swimming pond was lovely, despite my personal uncertainties with ping swimming, plus the use of two kayaks was exceptional. Many games around; badminton net, table tennis, chess, giant jenga and we were even treated to two space hoppers on the second day. The toilets were clean, regularly serviced, and well lit, and the showers were hot and powerful, with a helpful changing portion to them. This was by and far the best campsite I've stayed in, certainly in terms of facilities, way beyond expectations.

Disliked: The only improvement that could be made is the directions. We had a little trouble finding the entrance in the taxi, as Google maps was suggesting an entrance across a hedge and fields. Luckily we had a lovely cabbie who turned the fare off while we tried different approaches until we found it. Directing a cab driver to collect us was also tricky, as he drive into a different entrance, as directed by the post code on maps. I don't know how this could be remedied, but it would help others I'm sure.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review, I'm glad you had a lovely time. Getting google maps to set the entrance to the site has been extremely difficult as the entrance track is not mapped yet (it was only put in 2 years ago); I have made multiple attempts to use their flagging feature to highlight where the entrance is, but thus far haven't had any luck (this seems to be the only way to change the entrance via google maps!). The site straddles 2 postcodes which both contain multiple driveways and cover an incredibly wide area given our rural location.

Amazing views, clean facilities, the pond with kayaks was lots of fun,…

Liked: Such a beautiful place. It was quiet when we went due to the weather but still enjoyed it. Staff were friendly and helpful. Toilet and shower facilities made things south easier with young children. Plenty of games available. Would definitely return.

Bell tent

Liked: We stayed at the Holmsted Himalayas for 3 days and 2 nights in one of the Bell Tent. Communication was great, using the provided mobile phone with prompt response from Josh and Amanda. Bell tent was set up with double bed and 2 single beds. They provide bed lining and duvet. Basic cutlery, plates, plastic glasses and mugs were mode available inside the tent, plus a torch. Each tent had its own fire pit 2 BBQ are on side and can be rented for an extra cost. Bathroom and shower (with hot water) were clean. Site was tidy, grass cut with plenty of space for kids to run around. Some games are available such was pingpong, balls, jenga, chest.

Disliked: The communal tent is very spacious, but has only one fridge to share with all 10 tents which proves to not be enough. The Freezer was out of order. It would be good to have some picnic benches around the site in the sun. The swimming pond was clean, but the decking leading to it was dirty with some duck's poo. Visually the site is isolated with incredible views and sunset, but you can still hear cars on the very distance (It didn't bother me)

Bell tent

Liked: This is a really beautiful location and surpassed my expectations. Lots of space for the children to run around, peaceful, well equipped, hot showers, a lake to swim in… we had a really happy weekend. There’s lots to do in the area - we spent a lovely day walking at the Knepp Estate (rewilding project).

Disliked: The mattresses were a wee bit hard and there’s a bit of traffic noise.

Bell tent

Liked: Absolutely loved our 5 days away. We had the whole site to ourselves. So peaceful. The owners were lovely. Came up to clean toilets each day. Tents fab. Clean inside and out. Hot showers. We loved our camp fires every night. Sadly it rained but luckily mainly at night!! Really clean.. Fab electric in main tent for mobile charging etc. Fridge and freezer if needed. Views were amazing. We felt totally recharged by the time we left. Was lovely to sit outside and hear all the wildlife. We will definitely be returning. 5 stars*****

Local attractions

Getting out for walks or bike rides is a fine idea around here – there are plenty of trails to follow in this scenic area, including popular ones that take in the huge arches of the Ouse Valley Viaduct (10 minutes’ drive). Golf is another great way to get out into the open air, at the courses in Cuckfield (two minutes) or Haywards Heath (10 minutes). Something a bit more active? Perhaps you’d like to get out onto the water for some kayaking, sailing or windsurfing at Ardingly Reservoir (15 minutes), or have a go at things like clay pigeon shooting, archery or axe-throwing at Q Leisure in Albourne (10 minutes). It doesn’t all have to be active though – more relaxing days are on hand at Nymans (five minutes), a National Trust estate with gorgeous gardens to explore, and Leonardslee Lake & Gardens (10 minutes), where you can meet the wallabies as well as exploring the grounds. And of course there’s always the option of taking a tour at Bolney Wine Estate (10 minutes) – and perhaps picking up something for your evening by the firepit?
