  • Off-grid farm site outside Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey
  • Views over the Thames Estuary and a 10-minute drive from beaches
  • Meet the farm animals on site and buy free-range eggs for breakfast
Cooking up a few fresh free-range eggs for a cracking Kent coastal breakfast? What a way to start the day. That terrific view out over the Thames Estuary isn’t the only option as breakfast backdrop for guests at Clifftop Camping though. Pitches at this scenic Isle of Sheppey farm site are sorted on a pick-your-own basis, so you’re welcome to meander around the meadow, woodland and pond areas too before selecting a spot in which to settle. And those eggs? Well, they’re from the hens that reside on this working farm. You can buy their offerings while you’re staying here, and meet their pals too: the current roster includes sheep, goats, horses, ponies, ducks and rheas. This is an off-grid site so you’ll need to step away from the gadgets – but sea views trump screen time anyway, eh?. It’s also pretty stripped-back on the facilities front, but there is one compost toilet and one tented chemical toilet, and you can access water in the farmyard. For eats and supplies, a couple of pubs and shops are a mile away in Eastchurch; bigger supermarkets, restaurants and the like are 10 minutes’ drive away in Sheerness. Ins and outs should be fairly easy here, as you’re only around a 20-minute drive from the M2 and an hour or so from London. If you’d rather roam on public transport, there’s a bus connection to Eastchurch from Sheerness station.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Incredible views over the Thames estuary, you are able to see sunrise and sunset from your pitch (weather depending!). Proper off grid style, camp where you want and with so much space, you can guarantee privacy. There were also fire pits dotted about which you can use, I believe fire wood is available to buy on site too. Owner was friendly, and overall this is just the sort of place we love to camp at.

Disliked: Although elsan points are not listed as available, this would be a nice option to have, even if you had to pay a surcharge to use it. As it was, the compost toilets were fine and we emptied the cassette toilet when at home. The road in was fairly bumpy, probably not so much an issue to cars/vans but if you have a touring caravan it's more of a concern. Just take it slow!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful views, peaceful atmosphere. Lots of space.

Disliked: Someone had misused the compost toilets over the weekend- we arrived on the Sunday and it was a mess- I love a compost toilet but this put me right off. A group of people had been using the woods as a toilet also. Can’t blame the site but why would people do this? It’s such a shame. Spoilt what would have otherwise been a lovely break. I feel sorry for the owner who will have to clear up their mess. Made me a bit nervous about revisiting. Which is a shame as it is a lovely site.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Amazing views, quiet and plenty of space between campers. Such a big area. Fresh eggs from the farm for breakfast. Love the baby calves next to the tap area

Disliked: Tap area was a bit muddy, would of been nice hard standing area.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Stunning location, all that we need. friendly and relaxed owner, who clearly has great appreciation for their land, camp ground very well kept, tidy, and litter free. Offering exactly what they say they do. A tap, and toilet facilities, but most importantly a relaxed calm and quiet site to enjoy the view.

Disliked: Nothing.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Cliff top location, lovely to see the sea in the morning. Very helpful welcoming hostess. Free to lay an open fire, so our 9 yr old toasted marshmallows… first time ever!

Disliked: Awful coastline/beach : muddy, silty, oily. Not too easy to reach unless you’re in scrambling shoes. It’s supposed to be a marvellous prehistoric fossil location however.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The owners were friendly and the camping area was clean and peaceful with beautiful view’s. There were also a couple of raised fire pits to use.

Disliked: I understood that this is a working farm, however I would not expect my car to be damaged by the animals. Whilst talking to one of the owners on my way out and waiting for the gate to be opened the dogs jumped into my car barking in my face and left mud and scratches on my car. This was not acknowledged by the owner even though it happened directly in their view and I did not realise until later that day. Considering this I cannot give the good review I would have otherwise given.

Local attractions

If you’ve picked a place called Clifftop Camping it’s highly likely you’ll be after a bit of coast action. The quickest way to get it is to clamber down the cliffs (easier than it might sound; no abseiling needed) for a quiet little beach with some fab sea fishing to be done. Other options nearby include Minster Leas beach (10 minutes’ drive) and Shellness beach (20 minutes), where there's also a naturist area for folk seeking a skinny dip. Active types are well sorted for things to keep them busy too: saddle up at the stables five minutes away, tee off at Sheerness Golf Club (10 minutes’ drive) or breeze over to Barton's Point Coastal Park (10 minutes) for a nature trail, adventure playground and watersports. For a nod to travels of the past, it’s off to Eastchurch Aviation Museum (five minutes) or a narrow-gauge ride on the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway (20 minutes). Doddington Place Gardens are just over half an hour away if you’re more interested in gentle wanderings.
