  • Spacious site with 30 scenic acres, a short walk from the New Forest
  • A 10-minute drive from Mudeford and Highcliffe beaches
  • Streams and woods on site, as well as firepits; cycling tracks nearby
Combine years of experience, decades of enthusiasm and almost half a century of New Forest camping heritage and you get The Old Airfield, a wild-style site in one of the New Forest’s most striking areas. With plenty of space and fresh air, the site is just south of the New Forest National Park, where there are sandy beaches, deep woodlands and streams to play in. A short walk from your base, there's access to miles and miles of uninterrupted walking and cycling trails. The site is bicycle-friendly, and in fact, they actively encourage guests to explore on two wheels (that's if you're able to get past the New Forest ponies and donkeys who sometimes congregate at the gate). The Old Airfield Campsite is 10 minutes' drive away from the sandy beaches of Mudeford beach and Highcliffe. It's also a convenient five-minute drive from Burley's many shops and cafés. For bigger days out on England's south coast, make your way to Bournemouth (30 minutes) or Poole (35 minutes), a gateway to the gorgeous Jurassic Coast. The Old Airfield Campsite’s setting is rather special in itself, set over 30 acres of well-drained forest land, with views over beech and oak trees. New Forest ponies and their foals will be keeping an eye on you from the surrounding heathland. But things weren't always this peaceful – during the 1940s, the site was used as an RAF airstrip, regularly sending out reconnaissance missions to continental Europe. Now the skies above the New Forest are full only of birds and nature has well and truly reclaimed the land… Handily, this laidback spot has walking trails that are accessible as soon as you step outside the site gates, plus some of the New Forest's most popular cycle tracks just a few minutes' pedal away (and bicycles can easily be hired and delivered to the site). Stroll to the local pubs through ancient woodlands too.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The relaxed atmosphere, the communal area, the food and drink trucks, the music, the surrounding area, the neighbouring ponies and cows, being able to choose your own pitch.

Disliked: The ground was very stoney and I lost a lot of pegs. Might have just been an unfortunate spot I picked. Was also a lot busier than I was expecting and felt a bit rammed in, but I put this down to being BH weekend and the final weekend of the season.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: friendly staff, plenty of space, adequate toilet facilities, which were cleaned and checked regularly, live music in the evening, friendly atmosphere

Disliked: Not enough showers - only x8 which opened at limited times- long queues. Rules not enforced for dogs on leads which resulted in some dog poo not being picked up. No advice given on allowing some space between next tent - our neighbours pitched their tent a metre from ours when we were out - when there was plenty of space elsewhere - a bit more info on arrival would help with this.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The staff who work in the reception area are so kind and welcoming. I loved the views and the limited light pollution made the stars incredible to watch. Although I only stayed for one night and didn’t get to visit the food van on site, we were pitched up fairly close and it was beautifully decorated with hammocks and fairy lights making it a lovely place to eat and socialise. Lovely simple little site which is exactly what I wanted. Plus it was easy to get to!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Basic, quiet, but a social area if desired. Good coffee served in the morning. Hot showers, when they worked. Near village. Great cycling area

Disliked: Loads of wasps

From the manager: Looks like you had a great time! I remember meeting you and glad you enjoyed it all. The showers only stopped for a few mins one morning so that is hardly fair.. but we do always get complimented on our showers as they're so spacious and always hot! Its is great place to cycle and walk from isn't it.. Hope you come again one day on 2 wheels or 4!

A friendly, clean and welcoming site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We wanted a weekend away from it, booked the pitch Fri lunch time and arrived at 6pm. The staff were amazing and really helped, our original field was full but they were quick to help us settle somewhere else and came to check on us. Pitches were level and even with the wind we got the tent up no problems. The social area, bar and food in the evening offered a great atmosphere, which our kids loved (5 and 7) toilets and showers were clean, as was the whole site. It was easy to explore from the campsite and we went walking everyday Just what we needed to unwind and get away from devices and daily life. I would definitely recommend it. A great experience!!

From the manager: Odd to comment about the loos when others who reviewed the same weekend said the toilets are great! We have 20 compost loos which don't have a whiff of anything and are swept and cleaned every hour. And 30 porta-loos which are emptied every other day and cleaned every hour. Its not the Ritz but it is pretty bloomin good!

Local attractions

Walk and cycle straight from the site; if you like, forget the car for the weekend, as there are miles of off-road tracks and quiet lanes in the surrounding area. For swimming and kayaking, make your way to Highcliffe beach (10 minutes' drive) or Mudeford beach (10 minutes). For slightly more peaceful activities, Highcliffe Castle (10 minutes) has a beach and tea rooms. Barton on Sea Golf Course (15 minutes) is there for the golfing keen beans. Otherwise, you might want to wander around the harbour in Mudeford (10 minutes), Christchurch Priory (10 minutes) or the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy (30 minutes). Paultons Park (30 minutes) is a theme park that will surely pick up the pace again – many of the rides are Peppa Pig themed, which might be a hit with the kids. If it’s watersports, zorbing and inflatable aqua parks they like, you’ll also hit the jackpot with a visit to the Lymington Sea Water Swimming Baths (25 minutes).
