  • Off-grid East Sussex getaway on a private 2000-acre beech estate
  • A five-minute drive from Battle; 25 minutes to Hastings on the coast
  • Firepits provided for all pitches and areas to make dens in the woods
Longing for an introduction to 1066 country? Limitless walks and forest rises for mountain biking or den-making at your base? Based on the edge of a 600-acre woodland within a private 2000-acre beech estate, Beech Estate Campsite should certainly meet your expectations on both fronts. And bonus points must be awarded for the fact that every pitch (no matter the type) comes with its own firepit area too. It’s within these splendid Sussex woodlands that Beech Estate Campsite is based. In keeping with these natural surroundings, the site is completely off grid… so don’t expect things like hairdryers, phone chargers, power points, butler service, silk sheets or hot tubs. In their place, there’s a mains water supply and eco toilets and a shower in a custom-made wooden gypsy-style caravan. There are permanent wardens on site to lend a helping hand, too. Overall, expect a small-scale, quiet and relaxed vibe free from amplified music and with a low noise policy from 10pm. There are areas in the woods for kids to make dens and run wild – there’s no access for the public, so guests have exclusive use of the estate woodlands. The estate also has 110 acres of ancient meadowland dedicated to conservation, which supports wildlife like buzzard, kestrel, orchids, ox-eye daisies and over 30 species of butterfly. What a location this is for getting out and about too: Beech Estate Campsite is in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, five minutes’ drive from historic Battle, with its battlefield, abbey and cafés, shops and pubs. It’s just over two hours' drive from London, 20 minutes from the south coast and 25 minutes from Hastings. A number of local pubs are nearby, including three within 25 minutes’ amble of the site.

Faraway non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The best places to camp in the wild nature!!! Tent pitches are perfectly adapted to fit into the surrounding forest. There is a separate forest path to each tent pitch, which ensures that your tent site will give you peace and quiet and you can fully enjoy the surrounding forest nature. There is a secured place for a bonfire, compost toilets are perfectly clean and well-kept, a great idea with shower buckets. Beautiful paths through the forest. Joe and Hugh were incredibly helpful during my stay at this campsite, for which I am extremely grateful. It's so beautiful there, everything is so well-kept, surrounded by nature, birds singing, peace and quiet, that I can't wait to go back there.

Disliked: That I had to leave this wonderful place and go back to work ;) ;)

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: We loved being off grid and getting back to basic. Letting the children enjoy being in nature. The sounds of the birds in the morning and the open fires in the evening make it more fun!

Disliked: Nothing!

Bell tent

Liked: The bed in the bell tents are really comfortable and we had a great sleep. The campsite is very peaceful and quiet, you can’t really hear other people on their site. A lot of land to go for a walk and explore. All important utensils are provided, pans, plates, cups, cutlery etc. Washing up bowl, sponge and liquid provided. Hot shower and easy to use the bucket system. Choice of compost toilet or normal.

Disliked: Nothing

Faraway non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We liked the set up at Beech Estate. The communication was friendly and clear and efficient. We liked the distance between pitches. It was lovely to have a fire pit and our tent pitched in our own little clearing. We booked a Faraway Camping Tent Pitch and did ferrying our equipment with the wheelbarrows provided in 3 barrow loads. The car was left in the car park and we felt it was out of the way but near enough to be safe overnight. We used one bag of kindling and two bags of firewood to keep a fire going for 4 hours. Fire Grills were extra to hire so we just used small grill from our gaz burner close to the fire to keep the kettle boiling on the fire. We did not get any ticks on us at all! The camp wardens were friendly and helpful. The site was peaceful and we had a good nights sleep. We enjoyed walks on the diversely planted and well managed estate. We liked being able to separate our rubbish into recycling and general waste and glass and just took home our compostable rubbish. We saw baby bunnies, buzzards and fed the robins breakfast watching the sunrise! Beautiful Blissy experience. Thank you.

Bell tent

Liked: The staff were absolutely amazing. Always took the time to stop and speak to my 2 year old son. Nothing was too much trouble. The bell tent and pitch was amazing. Away from everything. We had woodland walks looking for animals, built a den, watched the stars and had such an amazing time. My son who hates showers even loved the rustic bucket showers :) we loved it so much we added another night!! We will definitely be booking for next year. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Disliked: Nothing. All was brilliant thank you 👍

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: Location, no cars next to pitches, open fires, fire grill available, forest pitch, large wheelbarrows to transport gear, clean toilets, very friendly and helpful staff. Very happy with the pitch I was given - secluded.

Disliked: No logs/tree stumps to use as seating around the camp fire. My pitch was at the end of path/pitch area so nicely secluded, but would’ve not enjoyed as much if had been assigned to some of pitches that I had to pass enroute to my pitch as they were quite open and not secluded. Some guests didn’t observe the noise/music curfew.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We're really happy to hear you enjoyed your pitch and the campsite. The majority of our pitches are quite secluded though we have some more open pitches that are generally used for groups. We'll always do our best to allocate a secluded spot if this is requested so it's worth mentioning this if you book with us again, we'd love to see you return.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: Staff is friendly and ready to help, the camping site has good toilets, showers are available, good trails on site great for short-medium walks.

Disliked: Having activities on site would be good, also 0 phone signal

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We're saddened that you wouldn't recommend us due to the phone signal and lack of activities. We run a back to basics, wild campsite that isn't always for everyone. We deliberately avoid activities and playgrounds as we have 600 acres of woodland to explore and play in. We also try not to have lots of people and children congregating in one area as this tends to create a lot of noise, which goes against the quiet, back to nature site that we promote. We do have some phone signal on site, though it is limited. We operate an off grid campsite and promote a chance to disconnect and have a digital detox. Our wardens can always tell you the best spots to get signal and also have a usable phone in case of emergencies. We're glad to hear you enjoy your stay regardless and would visit us again.

Fantastic experience, good facilities and beautiful surrounding.

Faraway non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We loved everything about the site. It provided the privacy and allowed for uninterupted family time. The service and facilities at the site are fantastic compare to some of the sites we visited and whats best, they are all environmentally friendly. The wardens are friendly and helpful and you can purchase lots of essentials at the site. If they dont have it, they will direct you to the nearest place. The pitches and the site in general is well maitained yet you stoll get rustic woodland camping experience. We have fallen in love with the site and will be coming back next year.

Disliked: Nothing really but you need to be prepared for some hard core cardio when leaving as the car park can be bit fat away, depending on the location of your pitch, and you need to make your way upwards with wheelbarrow full of belongings :-). Settling up is not an issue as you going downhill towards the pitches so gravity will help but packing up can be a very different story. We still love it thou!!!
