  • Well-maintained adults-only site on a rural Cheshire farm
  • A 35-minute drive to Chester, and 15 minutes to Cholmondeley Castle
  • Access to walking trails, including Sandstone Trail
If you’re looking for a chilled-out break combined with a real taste of country life, take a look at The Happy Pheasant Caravan Park and Campsite, an adults-only site on a 37-acre arable farm in Cheshire. Rural relaxation, uninterrupted vistas over your peaceful surroundings and the sight of horses grazing in neighbouring fields are the order of the day – there’s little to disturb you here apart from birdsong… When the weather is fine, you’ll want to make the most of the spectacular sunsets that light up the Cheshire countryside, so feel free to bring a barbecue along to provide alfresco dinners while you gaze skywards at the end of the day. If you need to source supplies, it’s a five-minute drive to the village of Malpas, where you can stock up on essentials for the grill at handy local stores. If you go off the idea of self-catering, that’s no problem either, as you’ll come across several takeaways and top-notch hostelries in the village. Need to work up an appetite for whatever meal you're planning? There are plenty of walks accessed directly from the site, including the Bickerton Hills and Sandstone Circular, leading to the ruins of Maiden Castle. Alternatively you may like to choose days out in Chester or checking out the area's many lovely castles and stately homes. Back at base there are several handy facilities provided, including toilets, tourer storage facilities, chemical disposal and recycling points.

Liked: We had a really warm welcome from Anita, who could not have been more helpful. Even suggested good days out and the best local places to eat! The site is walking distance to Malpas and all amenities. Campsite is really well looked after and facilities are spotless. Pitches are large, sheltered and level. We’ll definitely be returning.

Liked: Loved the site. The decor, the surroundings, the shirt walk to village with a lovely pub.

Disliked: Concerned about the fact that we had to make contact in order to leave. Awaiting the arrival of our 1st grandchild and if that happened in the early hours we wouldn’t be able to leave. We did try one day to call the owners in the morning but their mobile was switched off, this was a niggling doubt of ours. The electric was metered, again this was new as having travelled through Europe where things were very relaxed, felt again slightly against the grain. Beautiful site and well Maintained but with more rules than many other sites we have visited. Showers and more toilets would have helped.

From the manager: , Disappointing but I guess this is what is to be expected with post-holiday blues and a chance to win £500 for slating someone’s business. You originally booked for 2 nights with P-up at our park after reading the advert noting it says over 60+ times that we only have toilets and not showers. Thought out your stay you commented many times on how nice and well-kept park was. You were scheduled to leave after 2 nights, You said that you loved the park and the area that much and asked would we be able to book you in for a 3rd night’s stay. So we did, to do this we moved bookings around to accommodate you and also reduced the cost of the additional night as we now do not take booking via P-up. Then, the following day you again requested a 4th night’s stay, so again we moved people around and reduced the cost to accommodate you. With you stating that our park facilities are so, so bad I don’t understand why you rebooked twice on the run, in fact you turned your 2 night stay into a 4 night stay and even asked to stay for the additional weekend but unfortunately we could not accommodate you. The way the world is nowadays we have to have CCTV and a means of stopping caravans being stolen for insurance purposes, hence the triple locked high level security barrier. We put this in place to keep peoples belongings safe like your caravan was for its stay and to stop access to the wrong types of people. As you are aware the barrier only needs to be opened for caravans as cars will freely go underneath without it having to be opened. We obviously don’t hand out keys to the barrier, as what would be the point in having it. Our work phone is never off, regarding the security barrier you stated in your review “Awaiting the arrival of our 1st grandchild and if that happened in the early hours we wouldn’t be able to leave”. Suggesting that we could have somehow jeopardised you missing the birth and thus implying that it would have been our fault if you would have missed it, this is totally wrong of you!. If it was such a worry for you, then, it would have been a better idea not to book an extra 2 nights stay, in fact I don’t understand why you even went on holiday in the first place as it was obviously so important to you that you didn’t miss out especially going to a campsite that is 7 and a half hours away from your home. I’m no expect, but I’m guessing that it would have taken you a good 2+ hours to pack up and take down your awning then drive at 60mph all the way home. It’s also fortunate that your 1st grandchild wasn’t born while you were sipping Pimms in one of the local pubs in the village. If I needed to get somewhere as important as you state in you review, I would have left the caravan, jumped in the car and got home 3-4 hours earlier and dealt the caravan after my 1st grand child had been born not somehow blame and twist it around to be the park owners fault if you miss it when you had opportunity after opportunity leave but chose not to. I have checked the CCTV on the gate and you actually waited 6 minutes 34 seconds that morning for the security barrier to be opened. Hope you enjoy your first grandchild. J

Liked: Fabulous friendly host, made us feel really welcome. Lovely quiet site, lots of extra touches like flower wreaths on the gate and little gardens by every pitch. Massive dog walking field, and lots of dog walks where we didn't see another soul all the way around. We had the best fish and chips from Malpas, that we have had for years!Malpas has everything that you need. This will go on our regular touring list.

Disliked: Only downside was the toilets were not really suitable for someone with disabilities.

Liked: The most amazing site which we are very lucky to be so close too. The site was immaculate and had very basic amenities (no showers), but had everything we needed. Beautiful views, great pitches, and wonderful hosts. We were invited to a party in a communal area and Anita had put a table of food, cakes and drinks out for guests! It was absolutely brilliant and we've already booked to go again. Really close to Malpas village which is stunning with lots to do, beautiful walks from the site. No complaints whatsoever

Liked: We liked everything at this site, it's well maintained, the pitches are nice and big. Full serviced pitches where very good. Anita the owner greeted us and was very friendly and welcoming, she gave information of the area with walks and the village which was a short walk away with pubs and shops which gave us good places to eat. The site is very quiet and relaxing with just the birdsong to listen to. Would highly recommend this site and will return.

Local attractions

Chester (35 minutes’ drive) is a hub for day trips; you can take leisurely cruises along the Dee river, or meet the animals at Chester Zoo. Add a bit of culture into the mix with Roman history at the amphitheatre, or amble the city walls. Feeling lucky? Take a trip to Chester Racecourse (both 40 minutes) and have a flutter on the horses – and if you’re not that into betting, treat yourselves to a cream tea instead. This being Welsh border country, there are plenty of castles in the vicinity: check out imposing Cholmondeley Castle Gardens (15 minutes) or the medieval ruins at Beeston Castle (20 minutes) for spires, moats and turrets galore. Curious to explore further over the border? Attractions include Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the high-rise bridge across the Llangollen Canal – you can cross it on foot, by bike or in a narrow boat. National Trust-owned Chirk Castle (both 40 minutes) has gorgeous gardens and lots of art treasure to potter around, and Erddig House (35 minutes, also National Trust) has displays in old kitchens giving a glimpse “below stairs” in Victorian times.
