  • Peaceful riverbank site on the edge of North York Moors National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Scarborough and beaches, 20 minutes from Filey
  • Great spot for anglers, with river fishing on site
Casting about for a peaceful holiday? Hook yourself a spot for a stay at Riverside Caravan Park, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the North Yorkshire seaside resort of Scarborough. Down a quiet country lane, and on the banks of the river Derwent, this is a top site for finding a bit of calm: it's the kind of place where you can listen to the river as it flows by, hear the sounds of the countryside drifting across the fields from neighbouring farms, and maybe nab a patch of riverbank for some fishing. Music fans might gravitate towards the Scarborough Fair Collection, 15 minutes away, while others might prefer visits to the town’s beach, aquarium, Italian gardens, open-air theatre or golf courses. Want to steer clear of the seaside entirely? Turn instead to North York Moors National Park, less than five minutes from base, for hiking and biking trails, scenic towns and villages, and some fab heritage railways. Guests keen on keeping getaways low-key and low-on-travel are well served here. The site’s about half a mile from the village of East Ayton, where basic supplies can be sorted in the small convenience store, hungers can be satisfied in the restaurant or chip shop, and thirsts can be quenched in the pub. East Ayton’s also where those of a more exploratory disposition should go for local buses to the coast. Back on site, there are ladies' and gents' loos, electric showers, and two taps for fresh drinking water.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Location, price. The absolute hero of a local who towed us out when we got stuck in the mud when leaving.

Disliked: Showers/toilets were dirty. Only way off camp was through a ford or footbridge which wasn’t accessible by footpath as it was blocked. Lack of staff. Very wet and boggy after rain.

Liked: Can not find anything good to say about this site

Disliked: Having to cross a river to enter site Without being pre warned, nobody from the campsite met us on arrival we had to find the amenities for which at best very dirty ,basic and for the size of site weren't enough . Field was full of sheep droppings, and on leaving we had to get help as like everyone on site we got stuck in the mud ,yet again we got no help from anyone from the site ,we had to pay someone to tow us off which I feel we should be re embursed, we feel.pitch up should research the sites they allow on their website

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: The site should not of been open last weekend the ground was to muddy most people getting bogged down and having to be towed out by someone who was charging £20 to pull you out .the shower block was not cleaned over the full weekend just replenished with toilet rolls .a poor lady slipped in the mud and droke her arm should of refunded all and closed the site.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The local pubs.

Disliked: Entrance/exit is a river so you need wellies to get in and out as it’s about 6” deep, toilets and showers are absolutely disgusting, no one on site to show you anything or where to go, got stuck on the way in cause it’s all boggy local farmer was in pulling everyone which was a godsend, but cost us £20. Managed to get out luckily which we was exited for. Never ever will I stop here again or don’t recommend to anyone the site is half finished if that! For £30 a night is just a complete and utter joke.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Very quiet. No litter. Relaxed feel. Family friendly. Large spaced out pitching areas. Lots of space to play rounders etc. Hot showers. Electric hook up. It is what it is. It’s the most back to basics camping we’ve done. I didn’t mind the sheep being in the same field and found it cute- but sheep poo isn’t for everyone. We had a nice stay and we’ve made some great memories! it’s certainly not as bad as some reviews make out. I don’t feel they’re fair, either that or they’re Propper wet lettuces.

Disliked: On entering the campsite it’s not the clearest which pitch is which. Pitch numbers non existent. The ground to drive on is uneven. But the pitches are flat. No outside hot water for dishwashing (though you could fill your bowl inside and bring out). Always a solution. No brush to sweep grass from showers. So they got pretty grassy- but we’re in a field it’s going to happen. No direct contact person living on site. Though Lizzie was helpful and only a phone call away and we did see her every morning and evening and she was approachable and friendly.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Peaceful rural site Back to basics Lovely little stream bordering the field 10min drive to beach Away from busy roads Please don’t let the terrible reviews from the past put you off like it nearly did me! There is a tin and breeze block barn with a washing up sink outside and inside two clean working toilets with sinks, a disabled unit with toilet sink and shower and a separate shower. The trimmings arnt quite finished, if you want the ritz, book the ritz! Lizzie was very friendly and coordinated our arrival and pitch selection by phone and hasn’t bothered us since, however if I had a problem she is just a call away. The toilet block has moths and spiders like they always do but not nearly as bad as some places Iv stayed before because the lights auto shut off when you leave. I can only guess these facilities are recent additions/upgrades, going by the absolute slating previous reviewers have given. Thanks for a lovely stay, we will return in the future

Disliked: Early morning wake up call from Dolly the sheep and pals 😆

Local attractions

Sticking close by to start with, anyone who simply can’t get enough of fishing can make the five-minute drive to Wykeham Lakes fishery to land trout, carp, perch and bream, while those who are happiest out in nature should pay a visit to Burton Riggs Nature Reserve (10 minutes' drive) for wanders and birdwatching. Further afield, travels to the coast come highly recommended. It’s 20 minutes from base to the coastal town of Filey, where there are beaches to sprawl or stroll on, plus a museum, an animal park and birdwatching areas. The town’s also the start of the 110-mile Cleveland Way walking trail. A 40-minute drive up the coast leads to Whitby, a coastal town that inspired major elements of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Head this way for more sandy stretches, the spectacularly spooky Whitby Abbey and (during well-timed stays) the Whitby Goth Weekend. If Whitby Abbey inspired an interest in seeing more stunning old buildings, there are plenty nearby to choose from: it’s 35 minutes to Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall, 40 minutes to the marvellous Castle Howard (featured in Brideshead Revisited) and 50 minutes to Rievaulx Abbey.
