There are times when you just want a ferry relaxing break. Away from the hordes in the seaside resorts, alongside tranquil riverside scenery, and with the option on site of river fishing, lakeside fishing or just taking a pint of Woodforde Wherry to sup by the riverside and watch the ferry chug back and forth…

Reedham Ferry Touring and Camping Park is a pub campsite in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, with a private fishing lake available to guests to land carp, breach or rudd; you can also fish for free from the site on the banks of the River Yare (don’t forget your fishing licence). The four-acre site is level and landscaped with vivid views of the Norfolk countryside and marshes: if you’re not fishing, take your binoculars to the riverside to spy on the local herons, marsh harriers and kingfishers. If you do want to be beside the seaside for a day, the coastal resort and amusement arcades of Great Yarmouth are a short drive away.

Pitches at Reedham Ferry are roomy and level for both tents and tourers, with optional electric hook-up and no extra charges for awnings, dogs or pup tents; use of the slipway is free of charge too if you’re bringing along a dinghy or two. Amenities are plentiful, with washing up areas, several water access spots and a new shower block with shaver points. There’s a BBQ area on site if you’re dishing up your own grub – or just sit by the fire in The Archers and have your dinner brought to you. Ferry good all round, we think…

Please note: in the main photo this is not the river, this is a water feature on our site.

Nearby attractions and activities

Walk along the river to Reedham village for fish and chips, Reedham Quay and more pubs: the Lord Nelson has free gigs most nights, or take the yard of ale challenge in The Ship – both pubs are dog-friendly and dish up huge portions of food. The Humpty Dumpty Brewery, one of the breweries supplying the campsite, has a shop selling its beer alongside local ciders and produce. For families, Pettitts Advenure Park is also in Reedham, with a children’s theatre and animals to feed and pet.

From Reedham, you can take the 12-mile cycle route starting from Reedham Quay and going through local towns and villages, or take the chain ferry across the River Yare to drive on through the countryside: a car crossing is £4 one-way and foot passengers pay 50p. But as it’s the Broads, a bit more mucking about in boats is definitely in order: as well as the vehicle ferry from the park itself, there are several companies in the area offering cruises and guided tours as well as rowing, canoeing or sailing under your own steam.

The Broads Authority runs boat trips from four locations along the 125-mile network of rivers and broads in Norfolk, including a wildlife water trail from How Hill nature reserve with a visit to a bird hide on the reserve. For more birdwatching, the RSPB reserve at Strumpshaw Fen is near Reedham Ferry; look out for otters here too.

Take the kids to the zip wires and treehouses of the outdoor adventure centre BeWILDerwood, the theme park Pleasurewood Hills in neighbouring Lowestoft or to goggle at the gibbons at Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens just outside Great Yarmouth. The seaside town is about eleven miles from Reedham Ferry and will keep small fry entertained for hours if not days with its circus, Sea Life, seafront Golden Mile and twelve amusement arcades.

For more grown-up fare, head to Norwich with its medieval streets, cathedral and great Norman castle; for shopping, the city has one of the biggest open-air markets, open six days a week, while mustard fans can pick up all sorts of eye-watering produce at the Colman's Mustard Shop in the city centre.

Disliked: No one can help rain but the site was waterlogged. We got wedged on a concrete access by the bins.

Liked: This camp site was very welcoming had a lovely homely feeling. all amenties were more than we exspected.
The new block was very spacious,
with all the extra amenities I did not exspect (washer, dryer. two large sinks for washing up,Freezer) it is like a home from home.
we will return as this was the first camping trip we had had in over 35 years.
and had a great time. The staff were very ...

Disliked: The weather towards the end but this didnot deter us
Also this is was beyond the campsites powers
so all in all no dislikes
