  • Peaceful and simple site on a grazing pasture at the edge of the fens
  • Wildlife haven a five-minute walk from RSPB’s Ouse Fen nature reserve
  • Three acres of open pastures half an hour’s drive from Cambridge
Nest among the open pastures and small copse of native trees at Cuckoo Fen Campsite for a hol harnessing all that Cambridgeshire has to offer: clean air, big skies, lengthy walking routes and abundant birdlife. This three-acre park, newly opened in 2020, is a serene spot for lazing away while watching and hearing the fledglings in the surrounding hedgerows. Many more birds are in the vicinity too, as the site’s a five-minute walk from the nesting bitterns at the RSPB Ouse Fen reserve, Europe’s largest reed bed creation project. Eagle eyes might also spot the resident badgers, foxes and deer scampering about while wandering along the area’s many local public footpaths, bridleways and cycle trails. A short walk (20 minutes) leads to the village of Over with its local pub, well-stocked shop and other amenities, and the park is also half a mile from a public slipway on the River Great Ouse for launching canoes if you fancy wending your way around the local waterways. With a back-to-basics ethos, this eco-friendly site is proud of having low-impact facilities. Electricity isn't provided, but there’s a little lighting for the hot showers, washing-up sink and composting toilets.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful simple site that does everything just right. The showers are the cleanest and hottest I’ve experienced on a campsite and I love that you can pitch where you like!

Disliked: Could do with another mirror in shower block!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I am a single mum who came to stay for one night with my teenage son. The site was well signposted, welcoming, spacious and the facilities were clean. I really liked the laid-back friendly and eco-ethos of the site. It was perfect for families with young children and lovely and quiet at night (no music) with the nature reserve just yards away, and a beautiful view of the night sky. We also enjoyed a hot drinks and pastries from the visiting coffee van on the Saturday morning (also on Sundays, i believe). My son and I also loved the on-site pizza and being able to have a fire pit, with wood to buy from the little tented shop. We would definitely stay again and recommend it to others.

Disliked: We would have bought wood if available in smaller amount.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Our family and our dog recently had a very enjoyable stay at the Greener Camping Club - Cuckoo Fen Campsite. On a spacious camping field, actually a meadow decorated with wild flowers, this campsite provided us with the perfect canvas to immerse ourselves in the tranquility of nature. The carefully designed amenities were a testament to the site's commitment to sustainability. The original and ecologically built facilities, including the toilets, were not only innovative, but also in line with our values of taking care of the environment during our holiday. It was encouraging to see how the site managed to put environmentally friendly practices first without compromising on comfort. With sincere thanks, Kuipers family from Belgium

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very nice campsite in the midst of nature (but not too far from a local village). Friendly owner. Generous pitches. Clean loos and showers. Didn't try the pizza or coffee, but sounded very tempting. Would definitely return.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A peacefully friendly atmosphere on a beautiful and well-located site. I camped for a fortnight and greatly appreciated the clean toilets, free firebowls, weekend coffee availability and weekly opportunity to order a pizza cooked on site by the campsite owners. There's a river nearby, and it was ideally situated for trips to nearby towns and cities via the busway (especially good if you've got a bike). Possibly the best camping experience I've had yet! coming back as soon as possible. Thanks Tim and Emma.

Local attractions

This place really is heaven for birdwatching. As well as bumping up against the Ouse Fen nature reserve, a vast expanse of newly created reedbed habitat already teeming with bitterns, hobbies, cuckoos, marsh harriers and bearded tits – plus free-to-access footpaths and trails – the park is a 15-minute drive from the RSPB's Fen Drayton Lakes. Other scenic sections of the 200-square-mile Cambridgeshire Fens are also easily accessible from this site and the historic city of Cambridge is straightforward to reach via a short journey on the UK's only guided busway. Rather drive? It’s half an hour by car, and park and ride options are on hand to make the journey a doddle. Once in the centre of the region’s capital, amble around attractive university buildings like King’s College with its huge gothic chapel or the intricately designed Trinity College, moseying around museums stocked with archaeology, anthropology, science and zoology displays as well. Starting to crave the outdoors again? Head to the city’s botanical garden and stroll among 16 acres of plant life or bound over to The Backs park on the River Cam to watch visitors punt along the water.
